Here https://james-ross.c...jects/or/builds many Unstable releases may be downloaded. It would be useful for developers if someone getting the problem could identify which is the latest Unstable release that works correctly (or the first one suffering the problem)-

I checked, used U2022-07-16 myself for a long time.

I see that in U2022-08-11 is still the old way of Sphere lights, in U2022-08-18 you have the new way of Sphere lights (with the current problems)

I'll try to find out what actually makes the difference in terms of settings and "flicker effect"?

If this is related to this PR https://github.com/o...nrails/pull/570 , it could be checked whether the problem is present on this https://james-ross.c...%2008-58-40.zip Unstable release and not on this https://james-ross.c...%2008-28-37.zip one.

Sorry, my answer crossed your question.

U2022-03-03 goes right (old way Sphere lights), U2022-03-11 goes wrong (new way Sphere lights)
So new Sphere lights settings have been reset in the meantime..... (March --> August)

Thank you. I hope that the involved developer reads this thread and comments here.

I think I've found the "flicker effect" problem.

Apparently, the combination "Type (1), Headlight (1)" is the cause!
IOW, if you give a sphere light to H0, all sphere lights H0, H1, H2 will give the "flicker effect".
So this problem is independent of the "dimming settings" (which doesn't work at the moment).

Again just to be sure, Sphere lights on H0 has been possible for years, other than the fact that H0=off may be often used.

@Jonathan, concerns "the light point moves back as the speed increases".
Can you test this again in latest U release? I don't see it right now, but maybe you have an example of a .ENG file? Who knows what (unexpected) setting causes this with the new Sphere lights?

The moving light point is on my custom unreleased locomotives which have the sphere of light at the lamps physical position, as the locomotive reaches higher speeds it moves back and illuminates the stack and domes.

Try moving a sphere of light position to the point above the boiler and see if you experience it as well.

Thanks!!
I was able to reproduce this as well.
Indeed, the "Sphere light position" moves backwards at forward speed, and forwards at reverse speed.
(IOW, the Sphere light position "lags" as the speed increases.... )

The exhaust effect on steam locomotives behaves in the same way, Maybe there is something in the code which is common to both effects.

I forgot this is the same with fx but that they creep ahead of their origin point, something that also could need fixing but that's a post for another thread.

Tested in U2023-02-23, I see the headlights issue (which started this post) is back again???
Why was it put back in the release if the issues were not fixed?

Or are there new settings that solve this phenomenon now?

The problem with the headlights issue (post#01) has returned for the 3rd time......... ? :ko2: :ko2:
In 2023 the Sphere lights were back to normal again, at least in releases U20230306 to U20230929.

I notice that from at least U20231019 to the present these terrible Sphere lights effects have returned???

I sincerely hope that it concerns testing, and that this does not become the new standard in OR! :(

If anyone would like these Sphere lights effects (perhaps to simulate a toy Christmas train around the Christmas tree? :D ) then please make this as a separate option and bring back the old Sphere lights effects as standard.
Then the simulator will at least continue to provide the headlight lighting effect as in reality.
