Just discovered today that rolling stock and locomotives being constructed for Open Rails do not require textures to be loaded into the sim. This could be a huge boon to the newcomers to the hobby to become involved in constructing those models they want and learn to make the textures at their leisure.

The 2353 has been finished for a while now and had been loaded into MSTS so as to be able to view in Shape Viewer for texturing. The locomotive has been partially textured and none applied to the tender. Today while building a train for OR I accidently added the tender to the rear of the consist. I was very surprised when I noticed it was at the rear of my train. So I quickly dumped the sim and built a consist with the 2353 locomotive and tender. It runs fine in OR even with only partial textures.

That's rather interesting. Unfortunately, 3DC won't export an untextured model. Every face must be textured.

;)

TSM allows you to override that feature with warnings. Another good reason for me not to switch to 3DC. But no problem as I don't like it anyway.

Here's another unfinished model in OR.

Allen,
Are you using a black default texture, like the one that gets created in TSM when poly are not textured?

Yes! That was in the folder. So I took it out and this is the result. Still runs just fine. Not to take away from the true artists here. But wouldn't it be nice for new modelers to be able use the paint features in 3D modeling program for textures instead of having to use specialized paint programs. Should work for simple schemes.

I should point out that this locomotive is set up with the very simplest of engine file. There are no animations as far as key frames. Also it has no lights or smoke. Just very basic. And as I said before. I came across this by accident.

An extremely simple way of doing this in 3DC is to have a "default" single colour texture...and to fill the whole model with this texture before exporting. I do it all the time...but I use a texture that has paving on it. Makes some models look slightly strange!!

That is a very fine looking 10-wheeler Allen! Looks just as good as when it was running here out of Campo. I miss that engine. ;)

I do that too with every part I make. It's like a primer in my eyes. It keeps me from getting those error messages about an untextured face. I use a flat black, though, 353535.

;)

Had this running in OR today. Works great and looks good although it is a little to speedy. Pretty amazing with the number of animations. I may finish at least the "A" portion soon. Need a break from the Berk.
