The route that seems most interesting to you. Railroad and era. Give it some thought and then ask for suggestions per your thinking.

The best routes for open rails come from trainsimulations.

You could try some of the free routes at Trainsim . That way you have a better chance to see what is available in types of routes , from different countries and different eras . Won't cost you anything and you might get an idea of what your computer can handle comfortably . Also some of the routes there are much larger than others - very good selection .

Just a Thought !

What's the best flavor of ice cream?...

There's no one-size-fits-all answer.

My favorite freeware routes are, in no particular order:

Horseshoe
Surfliner 2_3
Blackfoot 3
NWL 6 (sure wish that NWL V7 would be released someday)
LaSalle Rockford & Central

All of these are masterpieces in their own ways. You could spend years of simming and never fully explore all of them.

For the record, I don't run non-North American routes, but I know that there are some masterpieces of free routes from other parts of the world.

The best route is the one you are currently enjoying running the activities or exploring. I second the post about TrainSimulations payware routes. The newest SP Shasta is worth the money.
Also you might want to download the free OR Starter Route
