Hi Roger,
thank you for your words!
What you describe is more or less what I have in mind, but I don't know if I will implement it.

That was funny.

So I'm musing over extended uses for the containers in using a gantry crane to load timber and lumber onto cars. It is essentially the same as loading containers just that the load is a log instead of a box. Gantry cranes were used for cargo loading at some freight depots so it would be reasonable, and works the same as the container crane. Would using the feature for this purpose be viable?

(Render found on google)

In the same vein a similar crane could be used to load coal and ore with a clam shell bucket?

Jonatan,
picking a container and loading/unloading it on a wagon means handling an object that has well defined dimensions and is a single object. As your picture shows very well, this is not the case wieh timber and lumber, where a bunch of objects, whose amount and relative position is not fixed, is handled at a time. It's something different. The only simple extension that I see, and that I already mentioned, is that of truck trailers.

I would intend to make a log bundle as a single defined object, not as a bunch of dynamic objects as that wouldn't be possible as you said. Some compromise in the visual appearance would have to be made but that's fine.

Likewise a single log placed on a flatcar one at a time would be the same as placing a container one at a time? It would just be many more of them and more tightly grouped togeather.

And define a default arrangement... honeycomb like, I guess..

That could be usefull for loading rails on wagons too...
There is a lot of cargos that could benefit from dedicated anims, but I'm only remembering palets and stuff wich would need a vehicle of sorts... quite complex... and ambitious

Reefers and tank containers may be used with the actual software.
