Yes, the ONR bought four used trainsets from the Netherlands State Railway in 1977 and only three years later replaced the Werkspoor power units with converted FP7Am they built.

Funny: the same tactics were used in "poor 1990-th" in ex-USSR:
Used powerless mid-cars of old EMU/DMU were accommodated for hauling by specially modified light diesel locomotives, or freight electric locomotives:
Even by coupling AC section to one end, while DC-to another.
By Belorussian order, Demichovo Mechanic plant (a.k.a. DMZ, which was previously specialized by NG cars building) built dedicated EMU-similar cars, and supplied them with modified for commuter-train propelling 2M62у's.
That's because Riga's EMU/DMU plant (a.k.a. RVR) have already stopped producing commuter trains; also, Tallin's electro-mechanic plant Dynamo was stopped, but DMZ yet couldn't produce tractive electric equipment, for making complete EMU trainsets. So they have used retired freight power for some years.
Then, they started manufacturing complete EMUs, initially by RVR's prototype blueprints, and later - implementing self-advanced projects.

The trainsets consisted of a power unit, a compartment coach, a coach with food services, and a coach with a control cab. They were semi-permanently couples.

In railway terms, they were 1980-1, 1980-2, 1980-3, and 1980-4 (also 1981, 1982, and 1983 were the original numbers} When the power units were replaced they became 1984 to 1987. The public saw them as the first passenger car was Car-A, Car-B and Car-C and that how you bought your tickets.

The compartments had two three seat benches, the passenger seating in the car with the food services and the coach with the cab were two seats on one side of the isle and one on the other.

In my example, there were even/odd order of marking powered/unpowered units.
And this order was different for EMU and DMU:
Unpowered had odd numbers for first, but even-for latter ones.

I have a set of drawings someone made in 2012. The drawings are just labelled "Power Wagon", "First Wagon", "Second Wagon", and "Third Wagon", so I'm not sure how the Netherlands State Railway numbered them.

I don't think, it's so principal.
Post 63 extended.
Screenshots are as links for not to confuse ONR topic.
Yes, there was moscow's repairing works (MLRZ) creature, which was deep modernization of "up to scrap-condition worn" RVR EMUs:
White-painted, sharp-nozed. It was nicknamed "maggot"

Did you modify the route Derek? In winter all the tracks should be covered with snow and you should only see the rails, and all those trackside trees should be twigs with no leaves.

Hi Paul,

No, stuff up on my part, I had to copy the summer textures over the snow textures to repair the damage.
I have not got around to fixing it yet.
