It will be nice if the future versions of ORTS (1.x) are setup files instead of archives.

Yes, I intend to continue with an installer for each of the major releases (v1.0, v1.1 etc.) but these will be in addition to the zipped archives though.
I haven't had any issues reported about the installer, so I've changed www.openrails.org/release.html to offer both options for downloading.
Something that concerns me is the Update option though. It's offering the latest version (up to once a day) but the latest version might be broken ! However careful we are as individuals, testing is never guaranteed and sometimes the latest version is missing something or only works on certain routes.
I wonder if there is any way to identify more reliable versions than the very latest one?

I hope it's pointing to the experimental releases and not my personal server. :oldstry:
Also, the updater doesn't work with installed versions so I'm not sure it's a good idea to include Updater.ini - it'll continuously prompt to update and always fail.

Probably not. We've gained a little bit of sanity by having the builds automated (thus avoiding mismatched binaries, source that doesn't compile, etc.) but it's pretty hard to go much further right now. We have almost no tests. If we had enough tests to make a reasonably confident "is this okay for general consumption" that could easily be wired in to the experimental releases or a special "update channel" for the installers, but that'll be a lot of tests.

Ever thought about using Clickteam?
It's an installer, it's free and it's very easy to use. Generally, I prefer it over zipped archives or zip installers when it comes to distributing files for installation.

Thanks for trying it. This is the first issue anyone has reported.
Did you try a second time?

I'm using Inno Setup because Pete Peddlesden is using it and I started off by trying to provide OR for one of his DVDs. Also I wanted some scripting and there are a number of web posts for Inno Setup about detecting Win XP and installing pre-requisites such as .NET v3.5 SP1.
I'm totally new, though, to the whole business of installers so advice is very welcome.
