We bought the DF11Gs for their power, not appearance, and, as Brody mentioned, they were indeed built here in the US. We were aware of the lower construction standards in China when we approached CDR about acquiring DF11s (and possible corruption in contract fufillement) so we established CRE and drew up our own DF11G designs under an agreement with CDR. The locomotives are based physically off the Chinese design but are completely different inside; they're built to US crash standards (considerably higher than China's) and use mostly US components (a GE prime mover and drive components among other things). The only things shipped here from China were the frames, trucks, and factory equipment necessary to manufacturing the carbodies.
There were some issues with the demonstrator DF11s and DF11G pair, though none before the units were sent into the field. The only other real issues with the demos was adapting their controls and readouts to the US system from metric.
