Teoretically, this is a Module concept, started in 1970-th, with ВЛ80с -for AC, and with ВЛ11 - for DC traction.
Instead of only one 2-cabbed, or two one-cabbed sections, You can assemble 2,3,4... -sectioned locomotive, when needed.
When no - extra sections will be just set-out. Instead of always running 12-axle monsters.
So, if You don't care about network numbers, painted on them - You are free to add two booster sections to the middle.
Mind the current system only: don't mix AC and DC units together.

ЭС just means "Electro-hauler Sectioned".
I guess, first digits only mean, that MU with given network number (-which follows "ESx" after dash) was initially produced as 2,3, or 4 sectioned locomotive. While "x" is a digit for series number, since end of USSR-era (when they were named "VLx" after Vladimir Lenin)
As digital MFD's are on driver's stand, instead of individual analog gauges for each of section's system monitoring (as it could be seen on 3-4 sectioned diesels), there will be no problem to use any combinations of end sections, having cabs, with any reasonable number of booster sections.
Have a nice day!

An example of non-module, but single-section concept.
Too high weight per wheel and end of the state have doomed it.

Here's a pair of Russian Decapods! A class CO17-1171 and Western Maryland I1 standing in for the Ел class it was originally intended to be!

Interesting, thanks. Do You mean, it was intended for export?
Is there USRA ten wheeler models, designed for export in the beginning of 20-th century?

For SO model, it can be seen, that buffers were removed and auto-coupler was mounted.
17 means 17ton weight per driver. SO is after Sergo Ordzhonikidze.

It's one of the "Russian Decapods" that US builders built for Russia, but the Bolshevik's October Revolution prevented the last batch from being delivered, so those last ones were instead sold to US railroads like the Western Maryland. Since there isn't yet a model of the ones that actually were delivered, I had to use one of the ones that stayed behind.

Interestingly, one of Lenin's trains was drawn by a Richmond-built 4-6-0, which, sadly, I have yet to see a model of...

Ah, I've investigated that question for some man some months back.
It was Baldwin's engines batch, wood fired (KH-type?), purchased for operation in Finland (till 1924 it was a province of Russia)
http://photos.wikimapia.org/p/00/00/70/79/95_big.jpg
Lenin pretended a fireman for anonymously crossing finnish border, being supported by finnish engine crew.
On #293 he returned to Petrograd just before Great October Socialistic Revolution of 1917

I do need it's model too for putting it there:

You've said "one of", so tell us please about the others.

Series C steam locomotive was developed at Sormovo Plant under the supervision of engineer B.S.Malakhovsky in 1910, as a high-speed courier steam locomotive.
Thanking excellent running characteristics, efficiency, reliability, ease of maintenance and design elegance, the C-series is rightfully considered one of the best series of domestic passenger steam locomotives. Locomotives of this series were built in the period from 1910 to 1919 at Sormovo, Lugansk, Nevsky and Kharkov plants. In total, 678 steam locomotives of C series were built. AUTHOR Vadim Shandarev © a.k.a. German. Many thanks to: Valery (lvsteam@orc.ru) - for invaluable technical advice in creating the model; also to Petr Kirillov and Sergey Ermolenko.
