I went to drive a Kiha railcar today, only to discover that I could not. There is no provision in the control set for this. As there are quite a few prototypes that use this, and have been modelled, I feel this is a serious omission.

We're getting pretty close to matching the MSTS simulation and bettering it in places. Perhaps it's time to draw up a good list of what OR is still missing - e.g. gearbox transmission as in the Kiha railcar.

That's not a commitment to include everything from MSTS and match it perfectly, but we ought to have the discussion. (And we'll exclude the editors too.)

What other omissions from MSTS do you care about?

I do not think that OR should perfectly match MSTS, it should improve on it, which it does in many areas. The basic diesel and electric operation is fine, to be level with MSTS it does need the mechanical gearbox to be dealt with, and applied to electrics as well. MSTS was never good at replicating automatic gears and until MSTS Bin arrived could not run a geared locomotive in reverse without a lot of physics fudging. As for Hydraulics, in MSTS they have to be treated as electric transmission.

My pet peeve right now is the way OR deals with loading scenery as progress is made along the route, the last few posts in https://bugs.launchp...or/+bug/1184372 explains that.

I think only the diesel mechanical simulation (gearbox transmission) is the missing MSTS feature from OR.
I hope diesel electric, plain electric simulations will be improved too (simulation of series/parallel, field divert shunt circuits manual/automatic, AC/DC traction motors), and of course the diesel hydraulic transmission simulation. And an ability of to make hybrid, dual mode(fe eletric/diesel) locomotives, but these are over the MSTS functionality.

The headlight glow, when it's set to full, is way too bright.

I would like to see true darkness in tunnels. The walls are just black, there are no darkness inside. When you meet a train in a tunnel, you can clearly see the train. IRL, you shold just see some dots of light. I would really like to see this inplanted in the future!

I'll add that to the wish list, Bill, but we're looking here for MSTS features which are still missing from OR - like the Kiha gearbox.

Please keep them coming,

Not essential but nice: Better versions of the .env and .camfig files.

- Required default .env files that are global to the route.
- Optional over-ride .env files attached to the activity (this can come along later).

Like in MSTS the .env are seasonal and define the initial levels of overcast and extent of precipitation. Needs to have the initial offset of water levels. Later development can add varying over time. Ideally it would also specify where to look for tertex textures (e.g., something like: Alternative Tertex ( Season, Weather Condition, Directory ), thereby both expanding the number of choices and freeing OR from the constraints of the original KUJU directory solution).

The .camfig file(s) would be better at the individual route level instead of one for everything. I'd like to provide the specs for cameras in the private OR forum.

1) Some MSTS cam features aren't yet implemented in OR, as e.g. the possibility of moving the point of view of camera #4 ;
2) AI trains performance parameter isn't yet implemented;
3) I read in a post some time ago that some alerter parameters aren't yet implemented;
4) At least the MSTSbin DOORS_DISPLAY cabview element isn't yet implemented;
5) the MSTS "hazards" aren't implemented (I don't know if they are of any interest for someone).

Telepole isn't implemented, and I'm not sure it needs to be...
