Thanks Jeff. And now it's time to relive a fun event in the life of the Arkansas operation. Seems ol' number 3 needed some extensive boiler work and little standard gauge two truck KLCo No. 2
wasn't up to the task.
So we contacted another South Eastern operation and borrowed a 3-truck 150 tonner to get us through. Here she is leaving St. Paul with the empties and a load of coal for Camp 22 and Camp 6 respectively:
Here she is nearing the bottom of the switchback - she'll leave the heavy coal load here and move it to Camp 6 while the Camp 22 log flats are loading:
We back 'em up the hill to keep the water over the crown sheet on the steepest part of the grade, the 5.2% center section of the switchback. Here's Cass No. 5 shoving hard on our six flats and caboose:
Ah, trees! This is what it's all about:
Ready to drop our empties and go back down and get the coal for the fuel station at Camp 6:
While we were gone the boys dropped the flats by gravity and loaded them up with logs so once we came back from Camp 6 the loads were ready to drop down the hill.
Holding them back against the 4.2% we cross a log bridge over a gully:
Dropping them down onto the middle leg of the switchback - He better have 'em well under control!
Brakes squealing!
Down through the S-curves:
Coming into the KLCo yard and mill near St. Paul:
Arriving at the St. Paul siding it's time to switch them into the mill, pick up another half dozen flats and do it all again!
Thanks for the loan of your fine Shay, Jeff. She really captures the look and feel of Cass 5! :whistling:
