Nice photo! At least with the roof walks back then, you didn't have to worry about getting your feet too wet if you had to go cut certain cars! ;)

What really has me interested, Dave, are those GS gons.
Tim,
This car, right?
If yes, can do. Lemme know.

Yep, those are the critters. Was this a strictly SP design? Because I've seen photos of NP gons that are similar in design. I haven't counted/compared panels between the two, but they look closely related. These would make a great addition to the sim, and I'd like to do them.

No, it's not a SP design tho it was standard on the SP Lines for several decades... IIRC about 75% of their GS gons (pre 1945) were this design. You could find similar (but not identical) cars on the UP, NP, and IIRC the GN.
I have your e-mail... I'll start shooting you stuff.

I'm looking forward to it. Thanks!
Us too! ;)
Just an FYI, this site gives us the history of the car: Ulrich Models Gon Page

It'll be a classic (I hope!).
I always wanted an Ulrich gon since I was a kid. I didn't know they were still made. They are so cool! That book mentioned in the press looks like it'll be a valuable piece for the serious modeler's library -too bad it's so pricey....

They're not. They've been "scheduled for production" for quite a few years.
Tony's books are rather pricy but for reference material on the SP freight car fleet they're still a pretty good deal. The only similar book that's better -- both quality and price -- that I know of is the Pere Marquette Freight Cars published by Bob Hundman. It's really good.

For the Eastern road ice reefer there is a drawing of a 1941 composite MDT reefer in "The Best of Mainline Modeler's Freight Cars vol. 2" which is a reprint of an article from the March 1986 issue of Mainline Modeler. Also regarding Pennsy X29 boxcars the January 2007 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman features an article as part of their Essential Freight Cars series on the X29, no drawings though. Unfortunately my book "Pennsylivania Railroad Passenger and Freight Car Diagrams" doesn't have the X29 ;).
