Hello Citizens,

I am newly returned to running Open Rails. I have some relatively old content on original CDs that I would like to install and run if possible - for example, the LTV-Erie Mining Company Expansion Pack for MSTS (Abacus, copyright 2001). Using a fairly new PC and Windows 11 with an optical drive. My computer can read the contents of the disc fine, but when I attempt to install the pack I get the "This app can't run on your PC" error message.

Running as Administrator does not solve the problem. Running in any of the compatibility modes that are available (there are many and I have tried them all) also does not work. The compatibility troubleshooter is unable to offer help. My guess is that the Setup.exe file (looks like InstallShield v3.0.111.0) may not be compatible with a 64 bit operating system.

Does anyone know of a solution, short of finding an old PC or laptop running Win 95 (or a time machine)?

Thanks in any case.

Peace,

Sam

The files on the CD are not zipped or otherwise compressed. Disc contents appear as follows:

_INST32I.EX_
_ISDEL.EXE
_SETUP.1
_SETUP.DLL
_SETUP.LIB
AUTORUN.INF
DISK1.ID
icon.ico
manual.pdf
SETUP.EXE
SETUP.INI
SETUP.INS
SETUP.ISS
SETUP.PKG

I can open and read the documentation (manual.pdf) but none of the executables will run.

Right click on one of the executables, go to Properties and try compatibility mode.

You could try this out, just a shot in the dark...the program is available at TrainSim.com. Ged Saunders ( Slipperman ) is a member here, you could PM him.

Name: utility22_v1_0.zip

MSTS Utility--Utility22. A utility which allows the user to add data from SecuRom/SafeDisc protected CDs which may or may not use an InstallShield 6 installer under Win10. PLEASE read the installation readme before running the installer. A full readme is in the installation folder. (v1.0) By G. Saunders.

Thanks. As I mentioned in my original post above, I have tried all of the available compatibility modes without success.

I guess, setup.pkg are packed files.
Which of them is largest? that one?
Could it be opened with any zipper program?

The thing is, You need no any MSTS program files to run routes/trains under ORTS - just content itself.

I understand that I don't need MSTS to run content in ORTS - I just want to extract the content (the route and maybe some of the rolling stock) so that I can use it in OR.

The file _SETUP.1 is the largest - approx. 276 MB. I tried using 7-Zip to open it but no luck.

Thanks. I actually have that utility, but it did not occur to me to try that. I will give that a try.

I tried using Utility22, but still no luck - it presents the message: "No data files found on CD." I think it is looking for *.cab archives. I have been able to EXTRACT the disc contents using PowerISO. But I am so far unable to RUN any of the executables.

Can you manually place the File contents?
The exe just puts the files where they belong but you can do that yourself.
