I have added a patch today (hopefully) to the unstable version that should reduce any acceleration effect with adhesion on steam locomotives.
Please test and confirm that all is now ok.

It's still the same for me. In time 0:00:20 I close regulator. When the force is greater than the train resistance, the locomotive accelerates. At time 0:00:38 I switch to a simple adhesion model. The locomotive does not generate traction force and no accelarates. At time 0:00:47 I switch back to the advanced adhesion model. The locomotive develops traction force and accelerates. The regulator is still closed.

Can comfirm this is the case as before: uncontrolled acceleration with incessant wheelslip as long as reverser is in forward direction, it happens irrespective of steam locomotive.

For any future tests, can you use the NYC locomotive from my site (this will allow me to replicate any tests - which I can't do if I don't have the locomotives that you have used). You can use your own locomotive after this.
Can you advise whether the "severity" of the problem is similar at all speeds, or whether it is more pronounced at higher speeds (use the Unstable version prior to today)?
I have added a patch to the latest Unstable version to force axle force to zero if throttle is closed. Has this "solved" the problem?

The problem varies with speed. At low speeds, the reverse is true and thesystem acts like a dynamic brake. At moderate speed things balance. At higher speeds there is a definite motive force. At very high speeds this provides sufficient positive feedback to produce uncontrolled acceleration.

You can see the 2 screenshots of the force monitor describing the issue
at moderate speeds the inertial forces are cancelling each other, while at higher speeds there is a net positive effect
From what I understand, these forces should balance each other out. A net positive force i.e. acceleration shouldn't be the case

I have added another patch to try and overcome the issues indicated with the steam locomotive adhesion - see the latest Unstable version
