I searched for engineer views looking down the track and could not find anything about a fix for this situation. Is it possible to code the engineers head to rotate left and right, and position the body either to the left or right? This would allow the view to be more realistic.

Hi, Steve!
So long hiatus, but nice to hear from You again!
I'm not sure to understood you right, but that's what we have:
- headout view, determined by *.eng-file's Headout () statement
(braces contain coordinates of the viewpoint, relative to the engine's model origin)
- Mirrored view for opposite side of the cab (auto-flipped headout view)
- Some controls to pan/rotate those cameras and
- Ctrl+8 for Instant resetting any of cameras to their default state (including FOV)
Isn't it, that you need?

I am sorry that my question is not understood.
I would like to see an unobstructed view of the track while the train is moving from an engineers position while sitting in the seat.
If I want to look at the control panel that should be another choice.
Even a long nose ahead engine in the real world has better visibility then some short nose cabs in Open Rails.
I have given out my personal phone number previously so that I might be able to explain what a real world engineer expeirences but I have yet to receive any calls.

The handles are a memorized position for seasoned engineers. Our eyes are down the track, the same as a pilot looking out the airplane window for take offs and landings.

Its colder weather now so I will be on more, I'm an outdoor guy in the warm weather.

Shift+1 removes cab wiev, so you will see only outside picture. Or, maybe with a piece of model shape's front hood. (or boiler)
Shift+1 again, and control panel will be recovered.

Yes. Some steering-wheel shaped controllers of cranes have a "pea" at their bottom surface, for feeling their state without need of looking to them.

WebServer gives an opportunity to display driving aids and other info through some of your gadgets, so you can keep your main monitor completely free of additional info, and see just tracks there.

I think what Steve's describing is only truly possible with a 3D cab. If I recall right, right-click-dragging will turn the engineer's 'head'.

I think there was a mechanism somewhere for scrolling the image of a 2D cab if it didn't fit the screen resolution, but I'm not sure that's really what the question is.

There are left and right views in 2D cabs, but they don't have working controls (that may have recently changed, but few, if any, cabs will have them yet if so)

Those are just up and down arrow keys, while left-right are cycling 2-d cab viewports.

I am hoping this will explain the realistic view I am seeking.

Hello, Steve.
I don't remember, is FOV adjustable for cab camera (likely no), but Shift-1 will remove everything, related to cabview for You to focus on the outside scene.
"head position" will be retained.

Like your photo.

I wonder if that image couldn't be made into a cabview texture. I'm tempted to give it a try... You wouldn't be able to see controls at all, but the view of the track would be top notch

These are 2 shots taken from a 35 MM camera I took in the 1980s. They are both from an SD 40-2 in Pipestone Minnesota. The lighting was terrible and I should have used the flash to get the cab illuminated better. The photo with the bridge is the normal view and the one with the automobile I was leaning forward to get more of the track in view.

I think it would take all new cab view shots for the older locomotives to have the engineer's view, and may not be possible as current FRA rules prohibit the use electronic devices in cabs today. Asking an engineer to take pictures could get them fired if they got caught.

If anyone can code this for anything feel free to do so.

So, those discs at the sides of the front hood are ventilation devices..
If I understanding you right this time, all we need is adjustable FOV to "zoom" the window in for more focused, accented view of the window, without cab around?

Yes, I believe you are understanding my thoughts. I believe this should be the true view with whatever keys are assigned to this position so to get an engineer's view going down the track.

The vent which you see on the nose is for the toilet on this style locomotive. Screw open for warm weather and unscrew to close for cold weather.
