I most definitely agree with Edward. Distributed locomotives is a must as I have seen the real deal an performance what the real thing does that company I work for just came out with a new rule. Rule to where DPU is recommended to be at a higher run then the leader when starting on a ascending grade to reduce the recent break into two's all over the system of PSR monster trains.

I saw that topic an think it should make it main distribution.

I think I have some old TRAINS Magazine articles that may be of help on this subject.

PSR

Ooof, that's a very, very naughty word indeed! Dave, could we have the forum auto-censor "PSR" to "really stupid idea?" :jumpy:

Maybe, but global commerce and demand is driving this...more container ships moving also, larger loads...more waste...there has been a record number of containers dropped off ships into the deep this past year.
I really understood what you're talking about when I counted 175 cars in a PSR intermodal....YIPES...that's http://www.elvastower.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/crazy.gifhttp://www.elvastower.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/ko2.gif

Naughty indeed I would change it to "Poor Safety Rail" as something happens no one can hear conductors radio an leaving the ports handbrakes applied to close to the rear you got crossings blocked for hours solving issues.

Like to see ORTS have random handbrakes or have brakes heat up wheels intentionally.

Talk about PSR how naughty is this on a long pool 😏

Speaking of brakes heating up wheels intentionally, I have an idea for a new feature in the visual FX department: Brake Shoe Smoke Emitters

In the steam and very early diesel eras, when dynamic braking was either nonexistent or not widely adopted, the only way to keep a train in check on long downhill grades was by means of the automatic (train) brakes. Consequently, so much heat would be generated by the cars' brake shoes that a visible trail of smoke emanated from the wheels of the cars. It also wasn't unheard of for trains to have to frequently stop to allow their brake shoes to cool before continuing.

I've seen an old video clip of a Big Boy descending Sherman Hill, with its freight cars trailed by a haze of brake shoe smoke, and I am sure there are other examples too!

DMIR's ore trains were known for that while desvending down to the Lake ports. It's probably possible to get a little brake smoke if a train drops into emergency. I could certainly smell it the one time I saw it happen.

Dust emitters in general would be pretty cool. I've seen it on coal, and a lot from iron ore. Open gravel loads would probably do it, too.

As far as defects go, I do think functioning detectors would be pretty neat for more modern routes. I would envision a special interactive object, with a few options for what to detect (dragging, hotbox, hot wheel, etc.)

Cool clip, but ARRRRGGGHH FRICTION BEARINGS AREN'T A REAL THING. It's actually kind of annoying that the "friction bearing" misnomer for plain bearings has carried over into the OR code.

To add my own arggghhhh to Erick's... friction bearing is a marketing slur promoted by Timken, the roller bearing people. The term by car builders (and therefore most shop men) used is solid bearing and even that is not quite correct but it's close enough. The actual "bearing" is a thin film of oil sitting on the solid end of the axle.

To find "friction bearing" in the code is not a surprise but seriously, it's very much like using the word "engine" instead of a "locomotive". People know what you mean but many wince on reading what was written.
