Maximum Speeds and Consists Thoughts about setting the Maximum Speed for a Train

As far as I am aware this is no longer required as a physics input for locomotives ( steam diesel or electric ) that have Open Rails physics, and is not required in wag files.
The current way to set the maximum speed of a particular train (in activity mode or explore route) is to use the lines in the consist file.
So for a train allowed to travel at 100 mph we might have MaxVelocity ( 44.7 0.75 ) in the con file and this will also show as the maximum speed in the track monitor where line speed permits, if the train now attaches another vehicle, restricted to 75 mph the MaxVelocity in the consist file does not change so if the line speed permits the track monitor window will still show 100 mph.
One way to deal with this might be to include MaxVelocity ( 75mph ) or MaxVelocity ( 120kmh ) in the wagon section of eng and wag files. Then the lowest maximum speed of any vehicle in any consist would set the maximum speed for the train shown in the track monitor.

For example, if you have an unfitted freight consist that in the real world would be limited to say, 25 mph, then the game would enforce the maximum speed limit of 25 mph for this player consist, even though the max track speed on that section of line may be much higher than that, and if the player consist exceeds 25, the overspeed warning is triggered. Likewise the track monitor would state the speed limit as no higher than 25, even if the actual route speed limit is higher.

All my consists for Thames - Trent route are set to realistic speeds for steam era working.
Regardless of max line speed, my unfitted mineral consists. Never exceed 30mph or lower when stipulated by a PSR.

G'day Dogbert,
Do you have any specific settings you could reveal for us please, as I can't find any info on what the two figures in the MaxVelocity parameter actually represent.

I have been using these settings for donkeys years, in both MSTS & OR.
They do restrict the AI and autopilot controlled consists to the stated max speeds.
08.94080 = 20mph
13.41120 = 30mph
15.64640 = 35mph
17.88160 = 40mph
20.11680 = 45mph
22.35200 = 50mph
24.58720 = 55mph
26.88240 = 60mph
31.29280 = 70mph
33.52800 = 75mph
35.76320 = 80mph
40.23360 = 90mph
42.46880 = 95mph
44.70400 = 100mph
Works for me but i am not saying it is the only way to do it.
Mike.

After i found out it worked fine, by changing the first number. :crazy:
Sorry i cannot be more help. But these days my mental health is all over the place.
EDIT: Just had a thought, i believe the second number is acceleration.

Mike.

From the Steam 4 Me site tutorials:
"MaxVelocity ( 33.08096 0.22339 )
First number is the actual max speed (in meters per second) based on TE/tonnage;
Second number is some kind of multiplier that determines what speed the AI train will slow to on grades and curves."
And:
"Here's a table summarising the findings - at 75% Expected Performance:
First Parameter Second Parameter Min : Max speed of AI train in mph
MaxVelocity ( 12.34 0.50 ) 10:20
MaxVelocity ( 12.34 0.75 ) 15:20
MaxVelocity ( 18.50 0.50 ) 15:30
MaxVelocity ( 18.50 0.75 ) 22.5:30
MaxVelocity ( 24.60 0.50 ) 20:40
MaxVelocity ( 24.60 0.75 ) 30:40
MaxVelocity ( 30.80 0.50 ) 25:50
MaxVelocity ( 30.80 0.75 ) 37.5:50
MaxVelocity ( 37.00 0.50 ) 30:60
MaxVelocity ( 37.00 0.75 ) 45:60"
Maybe that helps.

The first is roughly 40 times the Lead Engine MaxVelocity value divided by 90
