When I decided to learn about the original RE, I dug in and taught myself how everything worked. It took time, but was rewarding.
I haven't had the same inclination or dedication of time to do with TSRE.

I know about the trick of pressing "/" key inside the editor to stick the camera to the terrain, but is there a line in the settings file that I should add/should already be there to make this a default? Getting sick of going straight through the terrain upon moving when starting up the Route Editor.

If you press the period "." key it locks the camera elevation to where you are currently.
Nothing in the settings txt that I know of.
Might help.

I'm not aware of anything either as a startup default. It's just habit to hit the / and . when I enter an editing session...

Hello.
I think a manual should start by going through each menu and giving a proper explanation of how to use them. I also mean the right-click menus. In addition, these are function-sensitive menus.
Of course, I wasn't thinking of the "Save" and "Exit" sub-menu items in the "Routes" menu, but of things like "Reload Ref File". Or to the menu item "Errors And Messages" in the "Tools" menu. Many course builders are very surprised when I mention these.
Sincerely, Laci1959

These lines, when added to the settings.txt, will slow the camera considerably.
cameraSpeedMax = 2
cameraSpeedMin = 20
cameraSpeedStd = 0.20
