Yes, if you are coding a first person shooter game, but your program is not a game, it is a 3d editing program. Different purpose, different design requirements.

Here you have to use mouse too, so the same design requirements.

AFAIK the .hgt data that is available is 1 arc second -- 90m resolution. The entire country is available at the national map viewer in 1/3 arc (30m) and about 20-25% is available in 1/9 arc second. All of which was explained to you many months ago. It is still true today.

You can convert other data to hgt.

Mouse movement in such tools is for zooming... as it is, after a fashion, in Open Rails.

No. In 3d modeling tool camera is fixed on scene pivot, or fixed on train in Open Rails. So you can use zoom.
In route editor camera is not fixed. You can freely navigate through the world. So, there is nothing to zoom.

Nevermind. IN one year you know everything there is to know about route building. In my thirteen years I obviously didn't learn a thing.

What I have also done is wasted the last 11 years running this place.

I used other tools for scene building like CryEngine SDK
http://media.moddb.c...ngine-3-sdk.jpg
And I am looking how it's done.
And no tool has zoom like you want. You need fixed camera for that.

Look at Sketchup. You can learn a lot from it.

End of discussion.

Only to better clarify my position, I have expressed my opinion above and won't proceed further in this discussion and don't have the intention to revert what I have implemented. What has been implemented provides additional functionalities and possibilities. It is not mandatory neither unavoidable to make use of them :) .

Sketchup is 3d object editing tool, not "world" editing tool. Try make in sketchup something in size of kilometers/miles. You can do this but it is pain.

3ds Max is awesome 3d modeling tool. One of the most popular.
Train Simulator from my country http://eu07.pl/ uses 3ds Max for route building. Using 3ds Max in route building is so big pain that biggest routes have few miles and looks like shoot.

I'd prefer to keep all of our files in identifying directories for clarity of purpose, even if putting them elsewhere would not adversely affect MSTS.

I haven't found a reaction to my post #18 here. So I try it again with a further picture:

In my eyes the right side proposal in the picture would be an advantage to have only one folder named "openrails" in a route's folder. One folder where all the improvements and additional functions of OR are placed. In this folder one will find the familar structur of the MSTS folders again. By temporarily moving this openrails folder to another place one would be able to switch the OR changings on-off.
This applies not only to the OR carpawner extension, but also to all future OR improvements such as the turntables etc.

I've tested TSRE5 in conjunction with OR, and the feature works. With TSRE5 I inserted in a car spawner the link to an extended carspawn.dat present in the Openrails subfolder, and OR displays that correctly.

I think Carlo said it best.

Paraphrasing

Compatibility of OR towards MSTS means that OR must be able to run content developed for MSTS. OR shouldn't be limited if MSTS can not run OR content.

Compatibility of TSRE5 towards MSTS RE and MSTS means that TSRE5 can run route files developed with the MSTS RE. TSRE5 shouldn't be limited if MSTS RE can not run TSRE5 or OR content.

TSRE5 is a product for OR not MSTS.

I can see Dave's side of the argument but also it sounds like he doesn't want to let go of the old ways. Just gonna have to wait and see I guess.

We can work through this.

I like it. It's a bit more straightforward to create and apply a "patch" for a route to update it for better OR functionality.
