How to set tractive effort and such with ORTS in the .eng file?
#1
Posted 05 November 2015 - 02:29 PM
There's got to be a way to do this; however the problem I have is, if this pertains to the old MSTS Archaeic parameters of:
MaxPower ( 2222.22kW )
MaxForce ( 324kN )
MaxContinuousForce ( 316kN )
For example, how the fudge to I convert that stuff? LBS of Force doesn't seem to be convertable to HP, KW, etc... Not to mention with having Dyslexia, it makes it difficult to understand some of these things.
So, help..?

[ALso posting the entire .eng here, as I can't seem to find a file-attach option...

CylinderVolume ( "18.437986112*(ft^3)" )
With those two you are saying all cylinders receive the same pressure of steam. But that's not true of most compound locomotives... normally there is one pair of low pressure cylinders, and by low pressure I mean well under 50psi kind of low. That's your first problem. Your second problem is courtesy of KUJU, who did not provide the data parameters LowPressureNumCylinder(), LowPressureCuylibderVolume(), and Low_PressureSteamPSI(). AFAIK, neither has Open Rails. And what that means is the locomotive has to be presented tot he game as two locomotives -- a double header so to speak... but then you run into all sorts of other issues like distributing the weight.
My advice is to doa quick review of other compound locomotives and seekthe advice of people who have built those kind of models and creted their .eng files.
Good luck.

I'll look into that for sure; however the interesting thing with what you will notice about the T1 per that site, is apparently neither the T1 or the S1 had low-pressure cylinders, only high pressure ones. I am unsure if I can 'split' this engine, either, as I do not think the final T1 that Nicolas is making will be a split engine, either.

But if you go to http://www.coalstone...form-test/#loco you can download the test locomotive that includes 4 different eng files, two of which are specifically for Open Rails only. They should show you exactly what Open Rails needs in the eng file.
Far as 'split' engines are concerned, I do not like them. The only reason they exist is to get them into MSTS without sacrificing too much detail. There have been several articulated engines made for MSTS as single models and they work very well, but they are of smaller prototypes. Now we have Open Rails, there is no real need for multi part articulated engines of any power type.

The tractive effort given for most (all?) steamers is calculated (Note 1) as is in fact most TE's for diesel elecetrics. Due to the nature of steamers the actual real performance can be a good bit different, steamers in real life being quite variable machines. Engines of a single class each having its own personality.
Note 1: So they way OR does is quite reasonable, one DOES need to set up the eng files well, this is not really a task for the faint hearted. The example eng files on Peter's site being a mine of infomation, as is often the case though in open source world the code is usually a good bit ahead of the docs.

Mind explaining some of the mistakes, then..? And where can this Coals to Newcastle be found? What 'Sample' file? Kind of vague there a bit. ^^"

AH, that'd explain why messing with some of the options didn't do anything, then... Well lemme ask, based off of the cylinder number, diameter/stroke, do you think this locomotive would have a rather high acceleration? Because that's what it seems to have. A almost alarming amount of acceleration. I have no idea if it was prototypical for the T1, but, it just doesn't seem right to me.

If you go up 5 posts you will see a link I posted for the CTN site. The file you need is at the bottom of the page.
I would imagine that the T1s had a rapid acceleration if pushed and running light, a bit slower with a consist in tow, but still quite rapid as it is rather similar to having two locos double heading in the design concept.
