Student licences aside, it remains a very expensive piece of software for most people.

Huh? What are you talking about? How is it going to be expensive if you are getting the program + license from Autodesk for free?

On that basis it is hardly worth the effort to make an exporter for it, at least until the OR native model format is finalised

Well, this post is about this point, isn't it?

and maybe not even then.

I hope not cause we're here to contribute with models, I just couldn't simply understand not doing an exporter, that would be like shutting doors to part of the community. All models created in the Iberian community, all of them, are created using the freeware license that Autodesk provides. Again, no one pays, it is all for free...

I wouldn't like stopping development for Open Rails, I like the simulator pretty much, but it is quite a pain in the a** going through other programs, call it Gmax or Blender... But if there is no other option...

Its only free while you are a student. When you graduate you won't even be able to read your own models. And your time spent learning will be wasted. I don't see why our volunteers should help put cash in Autdesks pocket. You are better off with Blender - no limits on model size and forever free.

But it is free only for students. If you are not a student and use student licensed 3ds max, you still are a pirate. I know that average user doesn't care about piracy, but professionals that have skills to make file exporter and good quality models treat piracy seriously.

IIRC the student license is free but you have to have an e-mail address at any .edu site. The license is good for 3 years and cannot be renewed. The price after that is ~$3,600.

Well that's weird, still a student, more than 3 years have passed, and still using the same serial, so yeah.

Is it possible to download TSM in:

http://www.rundiomus...om/SimDownloads

Is the web of Louis Sinclair, developper of the tool, offering it free.

In my system, a powerful one, TSM shows instability at more then 55.000 polys.

But, using multiple FA, I am finishing a model with 155.000 polys.

TSM can animate ANITHING.

And is free.

But is limited in the texturing area.

Regards.

Now days, we dont have any reasons to hold on old software like gmax and autodesk products.
Blender is a very capable for geting the job done and have its own updated addon.

Amazing work made on blender:

gimp, krita, inkscape, scribus together can replace photoshop, illustrator and indesign from adobe, blender is also a good for texture and movie editor.

I create some trains that use difuse, specular and normal maps,

i realy like to see some changes on materials, something similar to unreal engine, pbr, recive ambient lighting from hdri, skyboxes.

Yeah, physically-based rendering (PBR) is pretty cool - I've got the documents from the SIGGRAPH 2010 Course: Physically-Based Shading Models in Film and Game Production, which I've read through some of, but have never had the time to implement any of it (in OR or elsewhere).

PBR system in Open rails would be outstanding but if we could get a shader system similar to DGT Train Simulator 2016 would be better than the current MSTS.

Still doesn't resolve the issue with the new ORTS new shape format, I'm not suggesting/asking for an exporter from 3DsMax to .S format, all I'm saying is that it is actually a pain in the a** to export these days to ORTS if you're a 3dsMax user.

Someone said that you could make high detailed trains in the actual .S format, which is true, but then you have to separate the train in at least, 2 .S files if you're going through Gmax... So if ORTS would work with a new format + support the .S file for users creating with old tools, is here when I ask for a export plugin from 3DsMax and to ORTS.

Plus unfortunately, with the .S file format you can do reverse engineering, and sadly in the Spanish community, we've had other communities doing this and publishing content not fully developed by them as if they were the original authors, so yeah...
