As an FYI, I recently submitted a bug at Launchpad: #1471414 Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Graphics.OutOfVideoMemoryException at ORTS.Viewer3D.PrecipitationPrimitive..ctor (X3186, Marias Pass 3.1, All the Way West)

I suspect this is related to this precipitation change. Note that I have the problem only if LAA is turned on.

Thanks, John

WRT the appearance of rain, snow, the "art" in the .png files themselves leave a bit to be desired. When I try to edit them the result is always a falling square instead of a drop or flake. Looks like the old 5 inch floppy disks have escaped the landfills of the world:

What's the secret in the art that allows the background to be invisible? I've tried masks.

Hi Dave,

Great pix - looks like you just lost the Alpha...
:lol2:

Typically - you have to SAVE the "Mask" as an "Alpha Channel" in your paint program...

In PSP it's under the "Layers" menu - - - "Save Mask to Alpha Channel"...

If you are changing the graphic for the rain drop - you probably want to change the Alpha Channel as well - so they match...

Regards,
Scott

That's not the case with Corel's Photopaint, at least WRT .tga files. You just do a save. But perhaps .png is handled differently.

PNG supports layers, while TGA isn't. So probably PNG is exported as is, but with TGA the layer is exported as alpha, as the format does not support layers.

I am guessing this is the version using the 16bit graphic. Since there have been a number of people having problems with out of memory errors, I have been working on a different concept. The precipitation box will now be sized by you. Look for the latest files that I uploaded for testing under "Out of Memory Exception" under "Maybe it's a bug"

When I follow that red line to the front if the locomotive, It appears to go close to the headlight position. Could this effect have something to do with the cone of light?

Are you running the test files for X3190? If you are, there are settings under the options/experimental tab that will allow you to change the size of the precipitation box. As of X3192, this is now official. The reason I came up with this was that in my previous version I submitted, these settings were hard coded. This turned out to be an issue for many people who were experiencing out of memory errors using LAA. These errors were caused by fragmentation in the unmanaged memory. The only solution was to give people the ability to choose the precipitation box size that would work on their systems..

In my previous work, I made a distinction between non-LAA and LAA. Now, there is no distinction. The right settings will work in both.

Note: Make sure the overall settings are balanced. If not, its more than possible you will experience the out of memory error.

I have to say that with everything maxed out, you will probably experience low frame rates.

Under the options/experimental tab, you will find the following:
Precipitation box height: Default 100 meters/ max is 300 meters.
Precipitation box width: Default 500 meters/ max is 1500 meters.
Precipitation box length: Default 500 meters/ max is 3000 meters. Note: the length also extends forward.

Sure it isn't the headlight..? Looks like it is by that angle-trajectory.. Hm... Lord I hope not, last thing the OR team needs is more issues!
