I may be barking up the wrong tree here, ...

Not at all, in fact your barking was right on the money. Made the changes you suggested, although some refinement is needed as you indicated in the post. Now it loads and runs in OR. The steam generation at idle is just fine, even shows effects from the breeze (which is cool). Brakes released, train moves and no dump to black screen or NaN. Runs fine. The steam generation looks exhaust like and I fear the folks in the following cars are going to choke on the fumes...needs some adjustment as you can see in the screenshot. So not an OR bug.

Changes made to file are below: Any input as to refinements would be appreciated, this is way beyond what I know, I just wrote in the lines with the values suggested and used some from the Scotsman.eng file,

Wagon ( "PB_DRGW_252" )
IsTenderRequired( 0 )
Type ( Steam )
MaxPower ( 1kW )
MaxForce ( 100N )
MaxVelocity ( 65mph )
WheelRadius ( 20in )
Sanding ( 6mph )
NumWheels ( 6 )
BoilerLength ( 6.2m )
BoilerVolume ( "160*(ft^3)" )
BoilerEffectivity ( 1 )
DraftingEffect ( 0.1 )
BoilerResponsiveness ( 1 )
CoalBurnage ( 1lb/hp/h )
MaxBoilerOutput ( 1lb/h )
NumCylinders ( 2 )
CylinderStroke ( 12in )
CylinderDiameter ( .25in )
CylinderVolume ( "1.1*(ft^3)" )
CylinderEffectivity ( 1 )
InjectorSizes ( 1mm 1mm )
ExhaustLimit ( 1lb/h )
PrimingFactor ( 1 )
SteamMinPrimingLevel (.85)
BlastExponent ( 0.1 )
MaxBoilerPressure ( 1psi )
MaxFireMass ( 1lb )
IdealFireMass ( 1lb )
MaxWaterMass ( 1lb )
SafetyValvesSteamUsage ( 1lb/h )
ShovelCoalMass ( 5lb )

Your modifications worked my friend, thank you! Do you think it was the GrateArea not being present in the .eng?

It was a combination of several factors and the zero cylinders tipped the balance.

Ah, I see! Makes sense then! :wallbash:

Now the only thing it does though is the steam and color of steam is variable on throttle.... Is that, accurate for a Steam Gen car? IF not, is there a way to fix this? if not, no worries, I'll deal.

I am wondering whether this type of car may create other problems in OR?

Firstly I would like to confirm my understanding of the purpose of the steam generation car on a diesel train.

Is it to only generate steam for heating of the train? Also the steam is not used to power the movement of the train?

Is this a correct understanding?

If this is the case, then setting this car up as a locomotive, in OR may set up an extra locomotive, and therefore inflate the pulling power of the train.

To confirm, can you please look at the extended forces HUD to see whether it is contributing to the tractive pulling forces on the train.

Is it possible to post a screenshot for confirmation?

Thanks

I can confirm that as set up the car provides zero power to the train. It cannot even move itself. However, what is needed is some way to use what is in effect a stationary boiler with no cylinders placed in a diesel locomotive body as there were quite a few early diesel locomotives that also carried a steam heat boiler of some kind.

What happens when it runs out of water? Does the whole train stop?...

No. It adds no power to the train, and it should not run out of water if enough is set in the eng file.

Maybe there should be a new exhaust FX for Steam Locomotives, perhaps "GeneratorFX", which would make a continuous stream of nice clean steam at the exhaust pipe from the dynamo. That would be a really neat effect for steam engines, and we could also use it to make realistic steam generator cars!

You could change the exhaustfx to cylinderfx and run with the cylinder cocks open. This should give a nice white plume.
