So, DRGW Alco PB 252, a steam Generator wagon, isn't being liked by ORTS at all. If it's in the consist, the moment you move the train, it comes to a halt and your speed changes to 'NaN Number'. What part of the .ENG is ORTS not liking? Log is attached.

Oh Yeah, I had forgotten about that one. Just tried it again to make sure, used explore with a consist containing the steam wagon and all BLW DRGW passenger equipment. Everything loads, release the brakes, the second you try to move the train, screen dumps to black, F5 Hud shows NaN. and nothing happens. It will probably take a steam person to understand what is missing from the file to make it load and run correctly.
The same consist with same route, runs fine in MSTS...actually shows steam being generated. (route same as above - DRGW Glenwood Springs to Grand Junction. (used X2995)

The log indicated that it cannot find evaporation area and sets it to 0m^2, which may causes the problem as divided by 0 can lead to NaN.

The other area to look is in the .s file, pay attention to the location of wheels and bodies and ensure that they are a bit far from each other.

It thinks the wagon is a loco, for the steamFX, I suspect, which MSTS accepted, but OR does not. Perhaps one day we can add specialFX to Wagons in OR.

Cheers Bazza.

Indeed, that's exactly what it is.... Another MSTS behavior that should be corrected before 1.0 is declared if you ask me, along with the sound issues.

The .s file wouldn't affect the 'running' of the rolling stock piece, it'd just not show up or have errors on the display side, not performance.

To my eyes, the file is set up correctly as an ENG file. I came to this conclusion when seeing the following lines:

SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0D0t______

...
	Type ( Engine )
...
Engine ( PB_DRGW_252

["..." indicates snipped content.]

Seeing those lines, I can´t help thinking about this quote as an excerpt from an ENG file. What the file extension is in reality, IDK, of course. If it is WAG, that might cause a problem, but I´m just guessing here.

In conclusion, it would probably be wise to check the file extension of this file (should be ENG) and then let route riter do it´s checks to be sure nothing important is missing from the file.

Cheers, Markus

Before, my cruddy Android browser (Samsung, thanks so much) cut out part way through a post. I meant that it would be nice if OR allowed special effects, such as smoke and steam, in a Wagon WAG file, rather than setting up an ENG file for a wagon.

Cheers Bazza.

I may be barking up the wrong tree here, but Open Rails will substitute figures for missing parameters. This may be enough to cause the "steam engine" to actually fail on start and cause the NaN. Looking at the file itself, we have a steam engine with no cylinders as well. So, I went and set up a steam engine with no cylinders to see what would happen. As expected. open the throttle and zero movement. The main result though was that well inside 30 seconds the steam debug hud went to NaN for pretty much every parameter except speed because I was not moving.

It is not an Open Rails bug that we are looking at, but something else. A steam engine in a diesel shell with unworkable data.

So, try changing the cylinders to 2 with 12 stroke and 0.25 diameter. The boiler dimensions may need to be larger, you will need to add a grate area, not too big, probably ORTSGrateArea ( 4ft^2 ) will do, and increase the water and fuel levels so it does not run out. Just fiddle with those until it runs.

It's a .eng, and I cannot use RouteRiter. It doesn't like or work on my system, so.
