1. Debugging a brake system sometime is necessary in units it was designed in.
2. Some countries use kPa (e.g. Canada, as it was mentioned in this thread), while others bar (all Europe). Both are metric, no automatic decision can be made here.

Hi All,
My original post (really intended as a question) arose from trying to write an entry (one sentence, ideally) for the ORTS Manual - explaining what was the effect of choosing the option "System" for the option "Other Units" in the General Options, as compared to the more obvious options "Metric", "Imperial US" and "Imperial UK". I don't think I am much clearer yet.

If the "System" option does not have a clearly defined purpose, or if it is confusing to users, maybe it should be removed. Or, as I mentioned earlier, it might be useful for debugging if it displayed the units that were used in the internal ORTS calculations; I assume that different authors may have used different units.

Thanks for the input, Peter, Gerry and Markus.

Cheers,
Sid.

The only purpose of this setting is that USA users will not need to change units at their first OR use. If it was removed, they would need to manually change it from metric. In your case, your government wants you to use metric units by default. I don't understand, what is not clear for you...

I suggest to add another entry in the drop-down menu, that is "Route", that selects the units defined for that route, as the Track Monitor does and as MSTS does, if I'm not wrong.

Moreover "System" could be renamed "Player country".

Sorry, I had assumed that ORTS would try to match the units of the route's country, rather than the user's country. I don't know how ORTS matches the user's country, unless it uses his/her local Windows parameters. That would explain everything!
If I run the Surfliner route under "System", I get metric units:

So if I wanted to use US Units (for realism), I would have to select them, rather than "System".

(EDIT: Sorry to all for my confusion ! Getting old...)
Cheers,
Sid.

"Route" entry would make sense, indeed. "Player country" in Windows Control Panel is called "Location", probably the same designation should be used.
