Thanks for the time and effort you put into making the tutorial. I haven't mucked around with soundFX for a long time. You don't mention [did I miss it?] which audio editor you used.
Two I've used in the past are, Goldwave and Audacity. GW was not freeware, but could be used with some limitations. Audacity is (I think) open source. Both had a feature used in MSTS sound files, but not mentioned in recent times, so not sure if people know of it [citation?] - sound cue point insertion.
MSTS default docs didn't include anything [surprise!] about the soundFX protocols, but quite early on some clever individuals dug deep and figured out the sound files and the vexing SMS protocols. There were discussions taking place on various boards, such as UKTS and TS.COM, in the early years of MSTS. Sadly, the helpful info appears to buried away in long unread forum posts, now lost in the mist/fog of Time.
The cue points were used only for locomotive whistle/horn FX. The sound cue placed a stop point between sections of soundFX in the sound [.WAV] file. I don't know how many cues were allowable; but I don't recollect whether it was [critical] to also have a cue at the START and/or END of the file, too. Remember the whistle is controlled by press/ON : realease/OFF, so there's no chance of controlling the sound output SHAPE unless you include a sound bite in the sound file.
Here is an example of a file layout - I'm adding a cue at the, it may prevent a sound looping.
Example is for a steam whistle.
}WHAAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOO-- (CUE) WHOOOOOOOOO--- (CUE) WOOOO WOOHOOoooooo---
(CUE){
Pressing the whistle key [spacebar] for short duration plays the first sound bite, pressing it slighly longer plays first and second sound bites and holding it down longer will play all three sound bites - the last can be a tailing off roostertail trill.
You edit the sound bite sound shape/envelopes to suit the range of soundFX you want.
Cheers Bazza.

Is it me, or does the video have no sound? It is very similar to how I loop horns, though, complete with deleting the loop.
"Anyone who doesn't use autocue is stupid."
I guess I'm stupid, then, but at least I manually adjust each cue point for the most seamless loop possible.

Goldwave was nice and easy to use despite of the freebies' limits.
