While waiting at a crossing the other day, I could not help but notice the distance glow of a train's headlights as it approached the crossing. This is so like the "Signal light glow" effect that has been added to Openrails. If we use the radius (for the glow light, or maybe the sphere of light?) described in the lighting section of the .eng file, could this not be used to good effect (pun intended, but not intentional)? No modification of the .eng would be required.

This would be a good feature.
The headlights of a train are NOT a candle flame!

Yeah, the glow lights are really primitive right now (more so than MSTS) - this is totally doable.

Well, during most of the era's that I model they were! (Oil lamps.) :drool3:
Thus, hopefully, a light system that is flexible and can accommodate acceptably realistic lighting from oil lamp days to modernity can be devised.

It's a great idea. It should be equipment and headlight intensity specific.
Headlights on low won't act the same as on full, and a Hyrail's glow shouldn't appear the same as a SD70 or a 4-8-4...

The steam engines that I use most (the Jon Davis models my VSC company commissioned) actually have very convincing illumination and coloration within MSTS. I think this is accomplished in MSTS via the "Lights" section of eng files with parameters to define the beam, intensity, color, and such as that.

Ya know speaking of lights and all, what about streetlights and such -actually- making light?

Right now there is a limitation that prevents more lights than what are on the locomotive (or is it train... I forget) you are driving. But yeah, streetlights with light... what a concept!

What is the limitation? I was running a BLW Alco last night and it featured headlights and rear lights, as well as inspection lights above each gear. I also have a number of steam era locomotives which I've been "tinkering with" and adding several other lights.
