For users like me who didn't have experience with MSTS, it could really help make the learning curve less steep. Seems like the more hoops people have to jump through to get an open source game working the less it'll be used.

Pete Peddlesden of UKTrainSim has invited me to promote Open Rails on his stand at the National Festival of Railway Modelling (Oct 18-19 in Peterborough), so I'll probably use it there - along with some live running, of course.

Just returned from 2 days at the UKTrainSim stand. We had MSTS, Open Rails and Train Simulator 2015 running side by side and the video also showing on a loop. Very much enjoyed it and was struck by the number of railwaymen that stopped to chat.

UKTrainSim hosts our SVN and website, so we owe them a lot.

I just watched the video, very nice work. I was browsing through the OR modeling portion of the forum when I found this thread.
The idea of an Open Rails Demo model to introduce the simulator to a wider audience, offering new users an easy way to begin is something the community should know about.
Perhaps more interest would be generated if it was made available in the general discussion portion?

Hence the need for really great smokeFX and steamFX for visual appeal. http://www.elvastower.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif

Cheers Bazza.

At the end of January I will be showing off Open Rails at the Amherst Railway Society's big train show in Springfield MA at the Big E. It's perhaps the biggest train show in the world, certainly in the US - perhaps 40,000 people pass through. I was thinking it would be nice to pass out CD's of Open Rails with a few routes and some stock. I have no idea if I'll be able to get this organized in time, but it's an opportunity to reach a larger audience, I think.

That would be terrific, Christopher.

Making a large number of CDs sounds like hard work though. I was giving away "business cards" with Open Rails on them which takes them to the website.

Wouldn't it be easier to prepare a demo route and make it available for download from the website? The one we're currently working on is UK-based, so who could we approach to donate a good American route?

P.S. I have 200 cards still left.

Bit surprised that the video has had only a handful of views and no comments either here or on YouTube.

Youtube says the video is "unlisted" and to think twice before sharing it. I think people simply can't find it.

Cheers,
Peter.

I uploaded it like that while I was seeking feedback from this forum. I didn't want to post poor-quality material under the OR label.

My intention was then to upload a polished version which would be public.

Best wishes,

Hey there.

"unlisted?" Well, I found the video with no problems. It certainly was not "poor quality".

But excuse my ignorance, but where do you download this demo route? This I cannot find. It looked very smooth, and realistic, I liked the stations, and the trains, And would like to test it out in my OpenRails set-up myself.

Good work!

It's not packaged yet with an installer or any instructions, but please try the Beta release and tell us what you think. Both the Activity and the Timetable options are included.
