Hi All,

I'm new to OR and MSTS, so please bear with me. I have installed MSTS and OR by the book, incl. recommended updates.
System is an AMD laptop A6 with Radeon graphics, 4 core, Win7 64. I have installed a couple of routes and some stock and mostly it is going well, apart from some random OR crashes when pressing a key.

Right now, I'm exploring Full Bucket Line 3 and with this I have hit a problem:

Installed the FBL E7 passenger set (http://dts2.trainsim...fn=fble7set.zip) with cab upgrade (http://dts2.trainsim...fn=funitcab.zip). In OR the program crashes the moment I try to switch to the cab. This happens on X2194 and X2265, but not in MSTS.

I can obviously change the cab back to the low-res version (which I haven't tried). Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks and regards,
Peter.

I get the same crash with same unit and cabview. Although, the first time I loaded it, OR stayed on the screen, cabview was displayed, and the crash message was displayed. Could not get it to repeat that, strange. Didn't think to get a screenshot. Needs someone with cvf knowledge.

Could you please attach .cvf file and .eng file of the engine?

Here they are.

Thanks,

There is something anomalous, because in the .cvf file dynamic brake lever and display are present, however in the .eng file nothing about dynamic brake is present, and OR does not seem to like it. In my opinion the two files cannot be used together. Does the real engine have or not dynamic brake? If yes, the dynamic brake parameters have to be added in the .eng file, if no, the dynamic brake levers and displays have to be removed from the .cvf file.

IMHO, the fact that in the CVF file dynamics are present, but not in the .ENG file should not cause ORTS to crash. In fact, it doesn´t crash MSTS and I have multiple such setups, where I used dynamics-equipped cab files on non.dynamic locos... Maybe really a bug?

Cheers, Markus

Yes, it is, even if OR cannot protect itself from all possible inconsistencies.

Should be fixed in X2298. Was not caused by the fact that no dynamic brake was defined in the .eng file, but by the fact that the DYNAMIC_BRAKE_DISPLAY MULTI_STATE_DISPLAY within the .cvf had not an initial SwitchVal = 0.

Great to hear you could solve it :whistling:

BTW, there seems to be another bug in the dynamic brake handle code.

In MSTS, most dynamic brake handle state displays show some indication of "Setup" when first moving the handle from the "Off" position and the dyn brake does not actually start to brake. It seems like this is just an intermediate position to switch the necessary circuits (thinking real life).

In ORTS, however, it seems on this first movement of the handle the state indicator stays "Off", which will give you an indication of "Setup" when you actually are in notch 1 of the dy brake, 1 when you are in two and so on. Also, you in effect get an effect from the dyn brakes in ORTS while in setup, which is not so in MSTS.

Of course, MSTS could be "bending reality" a little when giving no effect of the dyn brake when in setup, which would need more investigation (anybody out there with real life experience? :victory: ). I find it practical, however, to have a state where you get no dyn brakes, but don't have to wait for the 10 second setup process to complete. Makes controlling trains on inconsistently graded slight downhill runs a lot easier.

All these observations have consistently been made in about all X releases up to the last one I seriously ran a train in, which must have been when the upper 2100s were up to date. The log doesn't show any changes to the dyn brake handle and state indicator code since then, however.

Cheers, Markus

In ORTS, however, it seems on this first movement of the handle the state indicator stays "Off", which will give you an indication of "Setup" when you actually are in notch 1 of the dy brake, 1 when you are in two and so on. Also, you in effect get an effect from the dyn brakes in ORTS while in setup, which is not so in MSTS.

Are you sure about this? When I tested it, it worked in this way: When in off position you hit the dyn-brake increase button once, it goes to setup, and when the 10 s expires, automatically switches to 0%. At next button hit it switches to notch 1. Back from notch 1 for the keyboard press the state would go to 0%, and at next press to setup, and after 10 s automatically to off. The keyboard is inactive during the 10 s timeout, and there is also no dynamic braking force in off, setup and 0% positions.

At least that was the behavior I got earlier. (Now I am not at my computer to test.) What locomotive you get the wrong behavior with?
