Hope this is not too far off topic - just wanted to give a big :jawdrop2: to markus for the great DSU program. Finally got around to trying it, runs great, adjustments look good. Thanks again!

;) for the kind words, Gerry :)
Yet keep in mind, what you´re using currently is just an updated version (so that it can be published) of a program I actually wrote just for myself. So, features are limited. There´s more to come, when I finally am able to wrap up the next version, hopefully still this month :)
Cheers, Markus

Now that is approaching BAM 3TE10 territory! Mind you, I've seen UP 8444 (as it was at the time due to 844 being a GP30) blot out half of Colorado like that on a photo runby. :oldstry:

It's from the original .eng and the values in use are
I've updated them and am now using
which look pretty normal.
For the visual effect in the screen shot I left the train brakes full on, moved the throttle to 4% for a moment or two to fill the air w/ grey smoke and then rapidly pushed the throttle up to 100% and then back down to 0. The increase put all the black into the original gray and then the decrease mixed gray back into the black. It's more spectacular up close but I wanted to share the overall effect here.
DieselSmokeEffectInitialMagnitude( 1 ) DieselSmokeEffectMaxMagnitude( 19 ) DieselSmokeEffectInitialSmokeRate( 1.5 ) DieselSmokeEffectMaxSmokeRate( 30 )
I've updated them and am now using
DieselSmokeEffectInitialMagnitude( 0.8 ) DieselSmokeEffectMaxMagnitude( 1.6 ) DieselSmokeEffectInitialSmokeRate( 0.5 ) DieselSmokeEffectMaxSmokeRate( 2.9 )
which look pretty normal.

I found a similar solution a while back. I didn't know what would work, so I only reduced the Max Magnitude value and the Max Smoke rates, but not as much as you did. My solution worked okay, but today I went back and plugged in your values and your values worked much better. Thanks for posting this!

Seems to me that sometime between the start of this thread and the present the smoke production got turned up. Did I just goof my files and push an old version into place or has anyone else noticed its kinda smoky again?

The only way I would know to reduce the puffing effect, is to have a smoke rate of minimum 1. This will, of course, give quite some thick clouds of exhaust with MSTS´s default dieselsmoke.ace, so I suggest you either use a pre-built lighter one (think 3DTrains) or tone down your default one on your own (increase overall Alpha).

That was probably former steam president Steve Lee at the throttle. He's been known to smoke it up. Ed Dickens isn't a bad replacement for him, though, and from meeting him in person, I can say he's a pretty cool guy.
