It's from the original .eng and the values in use are

	DieselSmokeEffectInitialMagnitude( 1 )
	DieselSmokeEffectMaxMagnitude( 19 )
	DieselSmokeEffectInitialSmokeRate( 1.5 )
	DieselSmokeEffectMaxSmokeRate( 30 )

I've updated them and am now using

	DieselSmokeEffectInitialMagnitude( 0.8 )
	DieselSmokeEffectMaxMagnitude( 1.6 )
	DieselSmokeEffectInitialSmokeRate( 0.5 )
	DieselSmokeEffectMaxSmokeRate( 2.9 )

which look pretty normal.

For the visual effect in the screen shot I left the train brakes full on, moved the throttle to 4% for a moment or two to fill the air w/ grey smoke and then rapidly pushed the throttle up to 100% and then back down to 0. The increase put all the black into the original gray and then the decrease mixed gray back into the black. It's more spectacular up close but I wanted to share the overall effect here.

Thanks Marcus for the notice.

Will users of your Diesel Smoke Updater program be able to use it to change the smoke parameters for non-3D Trains models in gradual increments?

The next version I´ll publish will include basic customization features, to let users use their own values for the existing features. BTW, this next version will only be Diesel Power Updater, as wit the customizability, one can also have the program not change specific values. If you want something to stay untouched, just specify it. Will make life easier for me, as I won´t have to cross-developp two programs, and for users, as one program can do everything :rotfl:

Customization will be done using external text files specifying data to use.

Future versions could then include more features.

Cheers, Markus

Subliminal messages in diesel smoke? Now that's exhaust of the apocalypse! :rotfl:

Back in the day, I was doing some trainwatching with a friend of mine in Georgia. We started at Southern's Inman Yard, and saw freight crawling through the trackage, with a GE U-Boat (it WAS back in the day) clanking along in the lead. And when I say clanking, I mean it sounded like a busted piston. With every clank came a plume of very black oily smoke.

We were joking that the unit probably wouldn't make it to the other end of the yard.

Hours later we were continuing on to Columbus, stopping occasionally at some of his favorite trainwatching spots. I think we were in Manchester, when we heard this unmistakable "ca-CLANK, ca-CLANK, ca-CLANK" and, sure enough, that U-Boat came limping by, still spewing black smoke with every CLANK.

Now THAT would be something to hear/see in OR :lol2:

I think the trick to getting that would be to set the exhaust values high and have a throttle-specified rod clank sound stream in the .sms file. Alternatively, work it into the .wav files themselves. I think the same could be done for turbocharger lag and the new ORTS smoke effects...

If I might, suggest to everyone:

You won't be disappointed. Not in the least!

Yes, they are. I´m using them and suggest using them with my current release of DSU / DPU (the data used in these programs is especially designed to look good with these textures in ORTS).

Cheers, Markus

Can I get my U-boats to shoot fire out of the stack?

You could try with a custom smoke texture, looking like flames, and some custom smoke setup... maybe :rotfl:
