To quote part of summary for X1843:

"Add smoothing of simulation updates; for vertical-synced output, this massively improves things.....".

It certainly does; very nice improvement even at low frame rates (~ 25fps).

I'm glad you found it helpful even at those frame rates. My experience from testing is that it makes 60 FPS with vertical-sync enabled silky smooth but when you're running more than a few FPS lower than that it isn't nearly as effective. I did find, not really surprisingly, that when 60 FPS is out of reach, turning vertical-sync off performs a bit better (that's the default anyway).

I wonder if I'm seeing an improvement at lower frame rates (subjective, of course) with VSync enabled because I'm using the "Adaptive VSync" option with my Nvida card. This apparently "turns VSync off" when frame rates drop below the monitor refresh rate.

Yeah, that sounds like a good option in theory; I've not tested it myself. (If you're constantly running below 60 FPS, it's effectively vertical-sync off.) I'm not 100% sure how Open Rails' vertical-sync option interacts with NVidia (and others') control panels though.

A naive question:

How to activate this feature?

Many thinks.

If you're running version X.1843 or later, you have it. If you don't notice anything, don't worry.

There is a real improvement.
Same scenary, 45fps to 58-60 fps.
Nice.

Somewhere in the latest versions fits of stuttering seem to have returned, even with the fps at 60. This has also been mentioned on uktrainsim, along with some sound problems. Has anybody else noticed behaviour like this recently?

Does turning the sound detail down to 0 help? The Sound Process seems to be quite high...

UKtrainsim post mentions stuttering in r1847 compared to r1648. See here. This has nothing to do with the sound process.

Dennis, could you please be more specific in regards to version number, when you say "Somewhere in the latest versions fits of stuttering seem to have returned"? I'm just asking this because I made some modification of sound handling in r1849, and it is important for me to know if you mentioned version before or after this r1849. Thanks!
