Hi guys,

I just got to donwload the latest X release and during the process read the Revision history shown below the Downloads. In there I stumbled across this:

Quote

r1687 Wagons/engines used for the invisible train radio is now in use. The train
radio itself is working. Please test with any version of the Inviso wagon or
engine for any other issues and post under the Open Rails Forum.

Now, what´s an "invisible Train Radio"? Of what use might it be for the average, humble simmer like me?

Cheers, Markus

Basically it is a wagon or an engine that uses a special shape file so that it is not visible. A custom sms file is used so that when you are within range of the wagon, wave files can be heard within the cab. People have used them to give the impression that the AI train is blowing its horn. There are other uses as well. Search for "Inviso"

Ah, that clears up a lot. I was thinking of something Skype-like directly integrated into multiplayer-mode or similar. But that would have interferred with what´s told in the Manual...

Thanks for you answer,

Cheers, Markus

Keep in mind that this is a carry over from MSTS. The only difference is that MSTS never had multiplayer.

Yeah, whcih is a pity for MSTS... (the MP Thing)

I just have never noticed of the Radio Feature (or possibility) being available for MSTS. Maybe I´ll invest some time in some reading tomorrow :hi:

Cheers, Markus

I've not met this before either and I'm still not clear as to why it's needed. Couldn't you add the sms file to the AI loco and get the right effect? Are you able to elaborate?

Thanks,

The normal method for adding radio chatter is via the cab.sms. However, if within an activity you want to convey a particular set of instructions to an engineer, an inviso car with the message as an sms is used instead of an ingame pop up. With the correct settings the message is played as the player train nears the location of the inviso car.

If you add chatter via cab.sms then you wind up with non-stop chatter. I believe there was only one cab I downloaded once that used this method. The use of the Inviso wagon/engine is used to spice up activities. SLI's Scenic1 and Seligman1 used the Inviso set up. If you think about it, the car or engine does not have to be invisible. If you have a yard or siding full of cars, choose one and use that.

Chris,

You need to stop working so hard and play more :negative: As I mentioned in my other post, it is used to spice up activities. I have read that people would actually listen to live train dispatches while running a session.
