In newest manual for OR V 09 on page 32/engine - classes of motive power (see OR News under OpenRails forum heading) it says....switching on & off player engine.... Z key, helpers by Shift+Z, throttle set to zero. I don't know if the key is active yet .... try it. Take time to read the manual, more than once. I missed quite a few things first time through. Enjoy, cheers, rhs

I think that this option was deactivated a long time ago, but I might be wrong. It would be great if it was activated though... It would be interesting if we could choose what locos we would want to put working.

There is a typo in the 0.9 manual -
The option is still there, but the keys are "Y" and "Ctrl-Y", respectively, for the lead and helper diesel locomotives.

Sid, it's not Ctrl-Y, it's Shift-Y (but Chris has updated correctly the manual).
A couple of sound triggers could be associated to Keys Y and Shift-Y, one activated when the engine (be it the player one or the helpers) is switched on, and one activated when the engine is switched off, analogously to what happens for electrics with the panto switches. The couple of sound triggers could be EnginePowerOn and EnginePowerOff, that are already used by the electrics. Now you switch off the diesel and still hear the motor sound. Of course to have the correct effect working, .sms files should be upgraded (old files would work as of now, maintaining MSTS compatibility).

Thanks guys, tried correct key combination and it works. Thanks for correcting the manuals also. Some engine fan animation inoperative...."Y" and SIFT+Y do not seem to have and effect on this problem. posted new topic under disucssions. rhs

Look forward to a sound framework for the engine starting and stopping. Now we have the start/stop logic (not published yet) and maybe after the v1.0 release you'll get some SMS file directions how to make the starting and stopping sound working.
