File Name: MSTS D&RGW Dual Gauge C-48 2-8-0's #1147 & #1161
File Submitter: midneguy
File Submitted: 30 Jun 2012
File Category: Steam Locos Std Gauge

MSTS D&RGW DUAL GAUGE 2-8-0 C-48 #1147, #1161 AND TENDERS

ENGINES PROVIDED IN 3 TYPES - PLAYER DRIVEABLE, HELPER (DOUBLE HEAD OR PUSHER SERVICE),
AND AI

These models have been constructed to represent how they would have appeared in the 1930's TO 1950's,
and are configured as dual gauge switchers.

The D&RG purchased these engines as 220 Class 2-8-0's (numbers 1131 to 1199) from Alco-Schenectady in 1906 and 1908.
Later they were reclassed as C-48's and served under this classification for the rest of their careers. All were
retired by 1956 and sadly none were preserved.

Specificaions:

Type: 2-8-0 Wheel Arrangement
Boiler: 200 psi, coal burning
Cylinder Bore and Stroke: 23" x 28"
Valve Gear: Walschaerts
Driving Wheels: 57" Diameter
Overall Wheelbase engine and tender: ~59' 6"
Locomotive Weight Loaded: 220,400 lbs.
Weight on Drivers: 194,100 lbs.
Tractive Effort: 47,489 lbs.

*****************************************************************************************

MODELING INFORMATION:

Locomotive and Tender models created in 3DCrafter Professional Edition, Version 9.1.1 (Build 1256). Post Processing of shape file performed with Shapefixer File Version 0.1.0.39 by Paul Gausden. Textures created using MS Paint and Photoshop Elements 6.0, and converted to .ace format by TGATool2A by Scott Miller.

NOTE: With the exception of numbering, these models were not designed with re-texturing in mind so repaints will be difficult if not impossible to accomplish. Renumbering may be accomplished by editing the files DRGW1147nums.ace, and DRGW1161nums.ace .

*****************************************************************************************

INSTALLATION:

YOU MUST HAVE BIN INSTALLED FOR THESE MODELS AND THEIR LIGHTS TO WORK CORRECTLY. BIN IS ALSO REQUIRED FOR CAB SWITCHING BETWEEN PLAYER AND HELPER LOCOMOTIVES, AND FOR THE ANIMATED DUAL GAUGE COUPLERS. All files needed to run this engine are included, no additional downloads are required.

Unzip DRGWDG280s.zip to a temporary folder.

Move contents to ..\Train Simulator\ folder

Accept write overs if prompted, which will place a single engine consists in the Consists folder and
the locomotive folder in the Trainset folder

NOTES ON BUILDING CONSISTS WITH THE DIFFERENT ENGINE FILE TYPES SUPPLIED:

Included in this release are 3 types of locomotives to be used depending on their use as the lead or single engine in a consist, helper / pusher in a consist, or on an AI train. The sound files have been configured to achieve correct engine sounds for the locomotives in each of these cases, as long as the correct .eng file is used. The .eng files to use for these different applications is as follows:

Lead / single engine in Player consist: DRGW1147.eng, DRGW1161.eng and tender DRGW1147Tend.wag, DRGW1161Tend.wag

Trailing Helper or Pusher in Player consist: DRGW1147Help.eng, DRGW1161Help.eng and tender DRGW1147Tend.wag, DRGW1161Tend.wag

AI consist in any position: DRGW1147AI.eng, DRGW1161AI.eng and tender DRGW1147Tend.wag, DRGW1161Tend.wag

NOTE: Engine files are also supplied if you want to run with the white "extra" class lights turned on by substituting the .eng files that contain "xtra" in their names into the consist of your choice.

ALTERNATE SOUNDS AVAILABLE IN THE SOUND FOLDER:

Some of you may have a preference in whether or not
you want to always hear the open cylinder cock hiss
when you start the engines. I have provided two
versions of the .sms files so you can use the version
you prefer. In the sound folder are two other folders:

"Cyl Cock Hiss"

and

"No Cyl Cock Hiss"

The engines are originally installed using the .sms
files that have the cylinder cock hiss sound present.
If you want to try the models without the cylinder cock
hiss sound, simply copy the files from the
"No Cyl Cock Hiss" folder into the Sound folder.

If you want to have the cylinder cock hiss sound back again,
simply copy the files from the "Cyl Cock Hiss" folder into
the sound folder.

COUPLER ANIMATION:

The front coupler on the engine and rear coupler on the tender are animated on these models to simulate the transition from standard to narrow gauge positions. The coupler movements are animated as right doors - to change the coupler position hit CTRL + number pad 9. This is a cosmetic feature only since it is not possible in MSTS to couple a standard gauge engine to narrow gauge cars on dual gauge track.

If I have forgotten anyone I humbly apologize but know that I appreciate all the advice and inspiration I've received. I also must mention that the vast amount of information available on the forums regarding modeling for MSTS has been invaluable. The success I've had in making these models would not have been possible without drawing on the experience of so many others that have blazed the trail before!

Thank you all and hope you enjoy these models!

Outstanding models Derek. Very nice work. I have them all including the WP engines. However, I do get sound errors when checking with ConBuilder, as I do with all rolling stock before adding them to the Trainset. The errors do not seem to affect the operation of MSTS but I feel that any and all errors should be eliminated if at all possible. Just thought I'd pass this along and perhaps there is a fix. Thanks again for your work.

Regards,
Pinpuller

Here is a sample of what ConBuilder shows for one file but all files show the same.

Probably sound block reference copies within Derek's SMS. Like you say Pinpuller, I'm leery too of these conflicting addendum's that's wound up on many SMS from Kuju to so many today. Even though they're 'offside' in the SMS and don't affect actual operation. ConBuilder and I'm sure MSTS must be combing through them at some point and may cause disruption on different camera views, entering tiles with AI use, etc. As the saying goes 'cleanliness is next to Godliness' - or at least smoother and error free MSTS operations. :pleasantry:

I'm sure Derek will be on this like white on rice, and I can certainly help if need be.

Ah yes, I get errors reported every time for these .sms's in the same lines you're highlighting when I do a .sms check in route riter. These are the lines that have to do with the playing of the cylinder cock hiss sound. What's odd though is that I have never seen that it cause an actual problem in the sim though, either for myself or stability issues with anyone else that has tested them. The issue is having the cylinder cock hiss sound play when accelerating, but you don't want it to play when decelerating in that speed range - that's why there is no file called out on the deceleration side, or "" as it appears.

It's been awhile since I messed around with that portion of the .sms file but I seem to remember simply removing the "decelerating" triggers and it caused endless crashes. Or I could be wrong since my memory is fuzzy at this time. All I know is that whatever I tried at that time caused the sim to lock up and leaving it the way it is now kept it stable. I'll have to look into this some more though as something that might be cleaned up for future releases.

Thanks for the explanation Derek, I kind of had an idea it would be something to do with the cylinder cock hiss lines in the files. I can live with the error warnings as long as it is not interfering with anything else. So far I haven't noticed anything. These engines, and your others, are just too neat not to operate. :curiousPC: Thanks again.

Pinpuller

And as I said, I'll revisit the .sms design since I'll be going over it to get properly "synched" AI and Helper versions set up for the WP Mikado I'm now working on. With luck, I figure out what my issue was before, and have it properly cleaned up for all future releases :oldstry: My theory (totally unconfirmed, so only worth what you're paying for it http://www.elvastower.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/unknw.gif) is that the sound system in MSTS actually isn't bothered by being instructed to play no file at all, as opposed to attempting to play a file it can't locate. My hunch is that the error checkers in Route Riter or other programs are based on the assumption that an actual file must be called out rather than simply play no file at all.

At any rate, I'll be diving back into this soon :oldstry:

I thought I'd give a quick update on this sound file issue since I have had a chance now to revisit the .sms design and try some new ideas I had. I wish I had a magic solution to report, but it seems that the .sms design as they were set up on these originally seem to give the best results from a sim stability standpoint, and replication of the sounds as intended. I tried a number of things such as using speed based triggers rather than variable1, adding a silent sound file and including it in place of the "" (empty quotes with no .wav file called), different variations on the number of triggers used and schemes, and all to no avail... In the worst case I got CTD's and in other cases I got the cylinder cock sounds playing when they weren't supposed to or incorrectly - for instance, close the throttle down to zero in the wrong moment of acceleration or deceleration and the sound would play loudly even when it shouldn't be and other strange behaviors.

So, even though various checkers may report these lines as errors I'm going to leave the .sms design as it is. However, I will be including a disclaimer in my readme's saying not to be surprised if these errors are reported since there's never been any indication of the sim being effected in a negative way. The other option would be to utilize the "No Cyl Cock Hiss" alternate .sms files included in the download, and delete the "Cyl Cock Hiss" versions from the install. You wouldn't have the cylinder cock sound anymore, but those .sms files won't report errors either.

I wish I had better news on this, but at least the sim doesn't seem to care. I'll always have this in the back of my mind though in case I think of something else to try http://www.elvastower.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif
