IIRC, what Paul said was the .ace files used by RW have all the same features of .dds, except they're .ace, not .dds That said, I dunno where that makeace program is, nor do I see .ace used by anything not originating from Kuju. .dds is common, there's even a photoshop plugin for it and so, with some considerable ignorance of the details, my thoughts are we should try it out.

One possible means to implement could be in the shapes .sd file -- a wholly optional $Include clause:

Alt_Texture (
my_texture.ace = my.texture.dds
etc.
etc.
)

This way a shape could have all, some, or none of it's textures .ace files. It would also shift the task of making multiple, uniquely skinned models away from creating and maintaining many .s files to creating and maintaining only multiple .sd files along with a copy/rename of one .s file.
