NORTHERN PACIFIC CLASS W 2-8-2 #1548
DOES NOT OPEN IN MSTS! But works fine in Open Rails.
Post-1947 Configuration with Number Boards, Cast Steel Pilot and converted to burn oil.
!!**VERY-HIGH DETAIL**!!
MODEL MESHES BY TIM MUIR
TEXTURES BY TIM MUIR, WAYNE CAMPBELL ( SOLID WHEEL FACES) AND TEXTURES.COM (weathering and fire source materials).
Coupler textures originally from Steve Thompson.
Original coupler mesh by Jeff Link, modified by Tim Muir.
Additional crew member meshes and their original textures by Tom Werb.

MARCH 17, 2023 UPDATES:
_______________________

This is generally the same model as the original 2013 model, with the exception of the addition of the bolts on the steam chest and saddle under the smokebox. Also some un-needed polygons were deleted around the engine. It has also recieved new built-up engine truck wheels and a shadow under engine and tender. Cylinder and valve chamber heads were disassembled, remapped and reassembled. The new additions have added just over 2400 polys over the 2013 model's 31,851. So, it only falls to be tested in MSTS to see if it runs.

It has been declared that this model will not open in MSTS.

The textures have all been updated with new weathering effects. These were accomplished by adding new layers to the original artwork and selectively adding very light clones from weathered metal images and dust decal textures found at textures.com. If it is desired, these .aces can be applied to the 2013 model, but there are a couple of minor issues with the mapping around the cylinder saddle that may be objectional to some. There's also a minor texture issue with the small EQ air tank under the cab that I can not fix on either model. Sorry about that one.

Anyway, this was one of those wild ideas I got carried away on. I hope some will find a little bit of enjoyment from it. It looks especially nice in Open Rails New Years Mongame No.139.

Long Live the Northern Pacific Railway.

TWM - St.Patrick's Day, 2023.

Hey Tim,

In OR, for me, as soon as motion starts, the whole train loses it's wheels :cry1: Simple controls is not checked. Any ideas? I think I had that problem with the original as well. I installed and and just over wrote the files. Should I remove it and just put the new version in, or is it needing things from the original?

1529 does the same, loss of wheels.

Oddly, a consist with all the Ws in a row, in order with 1507 leading, all work fine!

Hi, Steve.
One member, who uses MG version, have complained about the same, with Tim's B&O #188.
Maybe this would be helpful in finding solution?

Hi weter, yeah, that issue with the non-braked 1860's 4-4-0's loosing all wheels upon acceleration was fixed by unchecking the Simple controls and physics box in the Options/Simulation tab. This works with Open Rails and Monogame, ( altho with MG I have to uncheck it each time I start the sim. Not so with OR 1.5.1). Steve did that but to no avail. I talked with him on the phone yesterday evening about it. I can't think of why he's experiencing this, and am waiting to hear if anyone else has seen this going on.

It's disconcerting...if anyone should be able to enjoy a W class Mike, it's the man who proposed the the thing a decade ago in the first place!

There may be a clue here, but what? Have you tried shifting the order of the consist of W's? I wonder what happens if you put 1507 with just 1548 or 1529 doubleheaded? 1529? Hmm, I have not run it for ever; will have to.

I have to wonder if anyone else has these problems with either of these engines.

From what testing I've done, I suspect the issue is in the 1548.eng, but not in the included 1548Help.eng I haven't tried the 1548AI.eng.

Thanks, weter, I appreciate your interest in the matter.

You mean the 1548 with the helper eng file doesn't loose it's wheels?

Not exactly, the same engine will work fine when run as a helper, so i assume that the basic eng file is different in some way from the helper file. I really don't know much about these except for changing bell and whistle.

In S-viewer I see, trailing truck's wheels are not rotating. However it's ok in ORTS.
Attached File  1548_001a.jpg (115.41K)
Number of downloads: 15
I've changed smoke stack fx diameter from 17 to 27 cm

Single locomotive runs normally under official 1.5.1 version, no critical errors logged.

Here are features, mentioned in readme.
I'll try and apply other ORTS-specific FX, if You, Tim, won't overtake me.
In first case, that will be here for sharing with ET people.

Cool shot!

Thanks.
The trailing wheels are "Wheels21" parented to "bogie2", a bogus bogie polygon hidden inside the ashpan. In TSM, wheels parented to a bogie don't need to have their rotation entered, it's done automatically, and won't be displayed in Shape Viewer. Wheels to which I have manually entered rotation values, like Drivers, will display rotation in SViewer. Now,
this brought up an interesting point. The other W's that do run OK on Steve's install, such as 1507, 1515, et al, have trailing wheels designated as Wheels 5 and parented to MAIN. Might have something to do with it. Seems strange neither weter nor I have that issue, though.

Steve: By the way, what version of OR are you using? I'm using 1.5.1 for testing and monogame for fun.

I suggest getting 1.5.1 so we can be on the same page. Chris needs to do the same in regards the City Point & Army Line project.

I got 1.5.1, but no dice, the wheels still all go away as soon as it tries to move.

Well, damn. OK, let me try another tack. I'll change the parenting of the trailing truck wheels to MAIN, as if it is one more pair of drivers. That's how all the W's you CAN run are parented. Why this differentiation between these models - why I did so, is lost to me. I'll get back to you.
