Chris, here's a more direct comparison for you. These shots are taken from some testing I did today.

Zoom in and take a close look at the ties on the tracks. The top image is from XNA, while the bottom is from Monogame. You can see the superior mip-mapping in the Monogame version - the ties are spaced evenly toward the horizon. In XNA, there are noticeable gaps.

This is in fact the advantage of a higher multisampling IMHO.

I'm not so sure; I'm running the unstable Monogame port, not yours. And James has set the MSAA level to match that of XNA's.

I'm interested also in frame rates. Could you report the frame rates you got in the above two cases?

Largely identical. 224 for XNA, 230 for Monogame/unstable, and 250 for Monogame/NewYear. (I wonder what the "secret sauce" in your fork is. ;) )
