Thanks to Coolhand101 for bringing this to my attention.
I have found the same issue using a different version of OR and a different locomotive.
This is what we have both observed:

Shut down No 1 engine using Shift+Y - no sound and no exhaust from either engine
Restart No 1 engine and shut down No 2 engine using Ctrl+Y - sound and also exhaust from both engines
Possibly someone more knowledgeable can confirm if there is indeed a problem.

Is it these controls to which you are referring? ( From sec. 14.1.1 in manual ) I just found them, didn't know they had been implemented. I suppose without them Ctrl+Y and Shft+Y just apply to Player locomotive and Helpers/MUs not to the prime movers in the locomotives.

Quote

14.1.1 Controls to switch on and off diesel engines
The keyboard keys to switch on and o diesel engines are following ones:
• Ctrl+Y switches on and off the first diesel engine of the player locomotive
• Shift+Y switches on and off the other diesel engines of the player locomotive, plus all diesel engines
of the further locomotives in the train, if they are MUed, (that is under control of the player
locomotive) which is the default.
Following cabview controls are available:
ORTS_PLAYER_DIESEL_ENGINE: the first frame is displayed when the diesel engine of the player locomotive
is in states stopped or stopping, while the second frame is displayed when it is in states running
or started. The control may be used with the mouse and starts/stops the (rst) diesel engine of the player
locomotive, and is useful when a single two state lever is used to start/stop the engine....etc

Yes, those are the controls that I am referring to.

Is this related to this issue raised previously?

Nobody seem too worried about the issue so it was left as it was.

It looks like the same issue. I am not sure how 'worried' about it people are, it has taken four months for someone else to notice the same thing.

Firstly I suspect that there are not many locomotives with multiple prime movers, and secondly most people probably don't turn the prime movers on and off.

The only time that it may cause operational problems is when using multiple locomotives, if the leading loco is a multiple, and the driver turns the trailing unit off to conserve fuel (which I understand is a modern practice) the they will also turn the trailing unit off as well as one of the prime movers in the leading unit.

Just to be sure, as mentioned at the beginning, I think there is a writing error in the Manual?
My experience is that Shift-Y starts / stops the player locomotive and Ctr-Y the other diesels (and second diesel engine if it exists) Or am I missing something with this topic?

See my post#2 or Sec 14.1.1 in the manual. I had not realized other cab controls were available until spotting this thread.

Yes, there is definitely an error in the manual. The two commands must be exchanged in the manual.

I'm unsure if this has been corrected, but it also states the Reverser handle needs to be at Neutral, to start or stop the diesel engine!

Thanks
