In light of the recent news of Union Pacific taking to get the project of bringing one of the old Big Boys back to operating condition here's a video of UP's steam giants.

Imagine if they tried to resurrect the old UP 9000 class? That would be a nightmare to have on the tracks what with the extremely long rigid main drivers.

Tailterrier27 made a short video of it being helped by a Big Boy behind it.

Yeah, ain't that the truth. Back in the 1980s with Southern's steam program I'm told the locomotives would sometimes pop a lead driver of the rails because of track adjustments after dieselization. For those who don't know, in the days of steam the rails were spread apart slightly on curves to allow the locomotive's wheelbase to negotite the turn, but this was removed when dieselization happened. If Southern was having trouble with 8-drivered steamers, I can only imagine the headache it would be to run a 9000 on today's track.

I'm really surprised at RW's sound. One thing Kuju did nice for MSTS is the Frequency curves. And/or activation/deactivation to get proper acoustics for internal and external views. That RW one at top sounds like it's all one Decoder set for all views. Yucky! But Brandon Smith, Dennis Miller, Anthony Wood, Matt Florack - these are the 'rock gods' of MSTS! :derisive:

Regarding watching the videos: I might, but unfortunately we do not have high speed internet available in our town, so video is mostly off-limits for me.

It's cool. Not everyone here has the internet kind you do. You sound like yours still runs on Dial-Up service. :)

Some of the best sounds I've found from a steam giant in MSTS were the ones from that Alleghenies video from Burritofarmer (aka Mike Laxer) that I've posted in the first page of this thread. I love that whistle he used on that giant steamer. Unfortunately I don't think those same sounds are available to the public for MSTS (I don't think he's released those sounds).

Here's one guy that gave a go at trying to drive a behemoth Big Boy with another Big Boy helper. Let's see how he does.

Don't Think I'll ever get used to RW with those wimpy sounds...

An old one pulled from the archives. Bellaville Flyer racing the Stripetail Express some time in the 30s-40s.

This is a real old video of a personal Seaview mod.

I don't know how these guys would be impressed. They probably don't know much about sounds. :lol2:

Here's something that seems to be out there since 2011. It's called ZD Simulator and simulates Russian trains.

The video below shows the level of realism of starting and running a Russian electric train. This is the translated description that is given in the video below:
Starting and ride VL82m, the trial was not conducted brakes. Made especially for those who have a lot of questions on starting ... Using Keys: We cut all the batchfile (low temp oil and auxiliary comp. unnecessary, unless of course aux. comp. did not need to pump), then turn on the shift + t, shift + u, shift + p, shift + g (for pick-up only the second section the first will not turn on), shift + j, shift +5, shift + o, shift + r, shift + f, shift + c, shift + n, shift + v, and only then put in front of reversivku (W), and then press Y and K.

Very nice Russian juicers. Saw a video of a Russian diesel in Trainz that had a very realistic startup sequence.

Not strictly a train simulator, but Vehicle Simulator is capable of simulating trains... to a very limited degree. It took quite some pushing but I managed to get VSF's single developer to incorporate a basic train system.
