I asked your question to a coworker of mine that retired several years before me. He used to work on the Santa Fe and has actually ran a couple of steam engines. (He's 93 now!) He said he thought that it was because, if there were 2 extra cylinders, which is what it looks like from the photo, it would help the fire burn better and be more efficient. Makes sense, but I've never seen any like that myself, so we both learned something here. :sign_rockon:
