History
Loggers were known for clever simple solutions to logging problems. One such solution was the horse pulled high wheel.
High wheels were a significant improvement over dragging logs to loading areas. One end of a log or log bundle was lifted off the ground by the high wheel, greatly reducing drag resistance. A loop of chain was positioned under the logs and hooked to cams over the wheel axle. The main beam freely slides back and forth and when the horse team pulls the high wheel forward, a lever rotates the cams, wrapping the chain around the cams lifting one end of the logs.
They were widely used in the upper Midwest and eventually replaced by mechanical tractors.
Model
High wheel was created with 3DCrafter 9.3 build 1620.
Based on drawings from the "Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette" January / February 1989 by Al Armitage and "Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette" May / June 2012 by Dick Whitney.
