OPEN RAILS SOUTHERN PACIFIC GS-6 4-8-4's #4460, #4462, #4464, #4467, TENDERS, AND CREWS

ENGINES PROVIDED PLAYER VERSION ONLY

NOTE: THIS DOWNLOAD REQUIRES THAT YOU ALSO HAVE DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED MY "SPMSTS484S.zip" from Elvastower.com (The MSTS compatible version of the SP GS-6 engines).

*****************************************************************************************

INSTALLATION:

Unzip SPOR484s.zip to a temporary folder.

Inside you will find a folder titled "SPOR484s". Copy the contents of this folder into your existing "SPMSTS484s" TRAINSET folder. Once this is done, simply edit existing consists or create new consists using the Open Rails specific .eng and .wag files:

Engine #4460 - spor4460.eng, spor4460tend.wag
Engine #4462 - spor4462.eng, spor4462tend.wag
Engine #4464 - spor4464.eng, spor4464tend.wag
Engine #4467 - spor4467.eng, spor4467tend.wag

As an alternate method of installation you can also copy the "SPOR484s" folder contained in the download .zip file into your TRAINSET directory. After this, simply copy the SOUND, CABVIEW, and image .ace files from your existing "SPMSTS484s" TRAINSET folder into the new "SPOR484s" TRAINSET folder. In this way you can keep the MSTS and OR versions of these engines totally separate if you prefer.

ADDITIONAL OPEN RAILS SPECIFIC NOTES:

This download is intended to provide Open Rails compatible shape files, and related .eng and .wag files to allow their correct visual appearance in Open Rails. The Physics of these engines have not been altered to utilize new parameters available in OR, nor have adjustments to other aspects of the models been made (smoke FX parameters, .sms sound design, etc). Final Open Rails versions of these models will be configured and released after Open Rails development for steam locomotives has been completed. Until that time, I welcome any input as Open Rails continues to develop to fine tune these engines for Open Rails as best as possible.

*****************************************************************************************

These models have been constructed to represent how these engines would have appeared
in the 1940's to 1950'S.

The following historical and technical information is derived from the book
"Souther Pacific Daylight Locomotives" by Robert J. Church

With the heavy demands of World War II traffic, the Southern Pacific needed more locomotives and submitted an order to the war production board including 16 more GS-4 4-8-4's. The initial reaction of the board was that more passenger locomotives were not necessary, so the order was initially rejected. The Southern Pacific then requested an order for copies of the smaller GS-2's, and referring to the "GS" designation as "General Service" for both passenger and freight use. This order was approved for the new GS-6 designated locomotives, though six engines were re-allocated to the WP in the form of GS-64's. All were oil burners, were equipped with trailing truck boosters, Worthington feedwater heaters, and Elesco superheaters. The tenders were nearly identical to those from the GS-4's, having 6000 gallons oil and 23,300 gallons water capacity. Initially these engines were used on the Northern District powering heavyweight passenger trains such as the West Coast, Cascade, etc, then were later assigned to the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys where they served until they were retired. 4460 is the only remaining example of these engines, being preserved today at the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, MO. 4460 also holds the distinction for running the last official steam powered railfan excursion on the SP with a round trip between Oakland and Reno in October, 1958.

Specificaions:

Type: 4-8-4 Northern
Boiler: 260 psi, oil burning
Cylinder Bore and Stroke: 27" x 30"

Locomotive and Tender Length: 109'
Locomotive Weight Loaded: 468,400 lbs.
Weight on Drivers: 270,000 lbs.
Tractive Effort: 64,600 pounds, with booster 78,350 pounds

MODELING INFORMATION:

Locomotive and Tender models created in 3DCrafter Professional Edition, Version 9.1.1 (Build 1256). Post Processing of shape file performed with Shapefixer File Version 0.1.0.39 by Paul Gausden. Textures created using MS Paint and Photoshop Elements 6.0, and converted to .ace format by TGATool2A and AceIt by Scott Miller.

NOTE: With the exception of numbering, these models were not designed with re-texturing in mind so repaints will be difficult if not impossible to accomplish. Renumbering may be accomplished by editing the files WP481nums.ace, WP484nums.ace, WP485nums.ace, or WP486nums.ace .

Texturing and Modeling Advice (from elvastower.com forums): Rick (thegrindre), Tim Muir, Dave Nelson, Bill Pratt, Alexey Soljenitchev, Fleegle411, Allen Norton, Herb Kelsey, Philip Michlian, and Tom Werb.

Providing my "I can do that" moment: Scott (scottb613 at elvastwer.com forums) and his "big dog - birth of a steam locomotive" series.

Inspiriation and Encouragement: All listed above and those at the elvastower.com forums, both in the thread of the construction of these models, and inspiration from other models I have admired.

Herb Kelsey for his help in reviewing technical details of the construction of the models, and refinements to the .eng and .wag file variables.

Donald Yungling for providing many excellent photos and drawings for the models.

Beta Testing and Input: Herb Kelsey, Tim Muir, Mike Long, Donald Yungling, and Tom Werb.

Brandon Smith for providing the .sms concept and the many of the sound files used including the air horn from SP 4449.

Tom Werb for the use of his excellent "Tom's Crews" cab figures.

If I have forgotten anyone I humbly apologize but know that I appreciate all the advice and inspiration I've received. I also must mention that the vast amount of information available on the forums regarding modeling for MSTS has been invaluable. The success I've had in making these models would not have been possible without drawing on the experience of so many others that have blazed the trail before!

Thank you all and hope you enjoy these models!
