Have you ever started MSTS, got past the "Establishing World Content", etc., now you are in the cab. You pass the mouse over a lever, for the "Throttle" or the "Reverser" or some other cab control, to operate it, then the game minimizes to the desktop but doesn't quit or return an error message? Here's what you need to do, while it is minimized, go to the cabview directory, open the .cvf file and look for the offending cab control, you may see the following:
Lever (
Type ( TRAIN_BRAKE LEVER )
Position ( 469 421 160 50 )
Graphic ( "Sometypeofbrake.ace" )
Style ( NOT_SPRUNG ) <<<<<<<<<
MouseControl ( 1 ) <<<<<<<<
NumFrames ( 6 1 6 )
NumPositions ( 5 1 2 3 4 5 )
NumValues ( 5 0 0.3 0.85 0.9 0.95 )
Orientation ( 0 )
DirIncrease ( 0 )
ScaleRange ( 0 1 )

Note where the "Style" and "MouseControl" lines are located. Change them to the following:

Lever (
Type ( TRAIN_BRAKE LEVER )
Position ( 469 421 160 50 )
Graphic ( "Sometypeofbrake.ace" )
NumFrames ( 6 1 6 )
NumPositions ( 5 1 2 3 4 5 )
NumValues ( 5 0 0.3 0.85 0.9 0.95 )
Orientation ( 0 )
DirIncrease ( 0 )
ScaleRange ( 0 1 )
Style ( NOT_SPRUNG ) <<<<<<<<<
MouseControl ( 1 ) <<<<<<<<

Note where the "Style" and "MouseControl" lines are now located. The "Style" entry may have either, "NONE, "NOT_SPRUNG", "ONOFF", or "PRESSED". Also, only change where "Style" is followed by "MouseControl" beneath it. Save your changes. Check all applicable entries are the same, if not change them as I explained. If you find any alias lines not enclosed in quotation marks, correct them now as well!!! *Now maximize the game window, when you pass the mouse over the offending control, the off white or light yellow rectangular bubble will show the control as either "Throttle", "Reverser", "Locomotive Brake", etc.. You can also use the mouse to operate the offending control now as well! If someone else already documented this, I apologize!!! Enjoy your run!!!

*Note at the time I wrote this, the method listed worked. It happened to me again, this time that method alone didn't work. I had to save the activity, then completely exit out of MSTS. When I restarted and went back to the activity/engine cab, it then worked. J.A.M.
