By the way, Claus, what is that very interesting "retarding" equipment for? I've never seen it before. It kinda looks like a gauge changing equipment like they have between Spain and France...

Retarders are used in hump yards to control the speed of the cars. And while I´m on it, a hump yard is a special sort of yard that makes possible faster operation. The cars are pushed up an incline by a locomotive, are decoupled on the top and roll down on the other side into the "bowl" (a usually HUGE yard, slightly depressed in the center, to keep the cars from running away). These "run aways" are kept under control by the retarders clamping the wheels, similar to the normal brakes on the car.

Thank you both for the explanation, Markus and thanks Guilford for giving a quite practical example of such a thing! :)

As for hump-yards, I knew about that practice but it hasn't been used in Portugal since many years ago... Although I've seen it being used last year in the Czech Republic! :D In Portugal at least, we used to put some stuff on the rails to "retard" the wagons. :)
