I thought I'd make this interesting topic to see if you are really familiar with MSTS.

What prompted me to post this is that I saw a pretty shot of the Ribblehead Viaduct on one of the original screen shots of MSTS.

At first I couldn't exactly identify which route it was. The shot below is what I was talking about seen at Train-Sim.Com.

I wasn't sure that it was the Ribblehead Viaduct at first. Then I did a run on both the European routes. So I tried looking for it. And when I ran the Settle-Carlisle route, that's where I found it. So I really like that bridge, as can be seen below. It's the longest stone bridge on the line with 24 arches - I read about the real one.

I think you will find that there are very few current routes that use any of the default stuff from the original MSTS routes. The quality of much of the original content shipped with MSTS was not very high.

We have all kinds of resources availabe to us today that did not exist when MSTS first hit the streets. Content creators have developed skills that allow them to make some fantastic add-ons for MSTS. Computers have evolved that allow the content creator to push the MSTS graphics engine to higher limits. No thanks to MS for any udates in all the years that MSTS has been out. The independent MSTS-Bin project has brought new life to the game.

Route builders have upped the bar too. Look at some of the screenshots of the newer routes. People aren't using the default routes for a reason.. They aren't that good. Both of the default US routes have be redone many times to correct errors and to improve them. I am sure the same is true in the European community too.

Yes, the European routes have been redone, too. At http://www.uktrainsim.com/index.php you can find "Skipton to Carlisle 1920". A better version of the Austrian Arlberg route can be found at http://www.ildeposito.net/ (Look for downloads/scenari) Both routes have been extended and equipped with more details. Here are two screens of these routes:



Lunch break on a switching engine in Carisle. (That's the name of an activity-I'd better say passivity- on the route: You're sitting in the cab and watch all the (included) trains roll by.)



Not only the route has been improved, but also the rolling stock. Austrian 310 with CIWL coaches.

Glad to know that a lot has been done on that route. Does that mean the old Settle and Carlisle section is within those updated routes?
