I have recently begun the task of converting several of my existing routes to use these track sounds. If you're thinking about trying this for yourself, here's some points of advice:

  • You must first delete all of the existing sound regions on your route before you edit your ttype.dat file. Doing this now will help prevent any errors later. You must also "leave no stone unturned" -- you must check every siding, spur, auxiliary track, industry track, and even hidden tracks that aren't ordinarily visible in the game!
  • You must also create an OpenRails folder in your route's directory (if your route doesn't already have one), copy the au_ctn_test_route.trk file from the test route's OpenRails folder, and paste it into the OpenRails folder of the route you are editing (changing the name of the file from "au_ctn_test_route.trk" to the same name as the existing *.trk file.
  • For a modern route that uses welded instead of jointed rail, you can simply copy the *.sms files from the pack, and delete the track-joint streams (these are the first two streams in the file). Also you can delete the ORTSDistanceBetweenTrackJoints parameter from the *.trk file in the route's OpenRails folder.
  • Currently, there is no direct replacement for the old MSTS sound regions titled "Under Bridge" (used whenever the track crosses under, say, a road overpass), and "Crossing Platform" (used when the tracks pass over a grade crossing or whenever tracks are set in the pavement -- streetcar/tram lines, etc.).
