I am working with Open Rails 1.5.1, and the BNSF starter route from May 2024, as well as the BNSF Heritage SD20-2s from TrainSimulations.net. I've added working ditch lights to the SD40s, and pulled the cones of light for the headlights back to the headlight location on the SD40s, the ES44ACs, and the C44-9Ws. Both changes have enhanced the realism (in my humble opinion!).
Now I would like to add engine starting sounds to the locomotives, since I prefer to begin an activity with engines off. The OR manual for version 1.5.1 says that those sound triggers (#23/#24: Power On/Power Off) require MSTS Bin. Some forum posts I've researched say MSTS Bin is NOT required. Could someone provide some guidance with this issue? (And, if MSTS Bin is required, where could I get it, and is the installation straight-forward? Google searching hasn't yielded a download site.)
A related question: Where could I find the starting/stopping sound .wav files? (I haven't yet explored the ET file download area--> any direction would be appreciated.)
Thanks for your time!

MSTSbin is not required as I run OR without an MSTS/MSTSbin installation on my system.

MSTSBin was a replacement exe for MSTS.exe.
Open Rails is a different system and has different exe's.
Open Rails just uses the MSTS content, ie routes and rolling stock.

Thank you both!
It was the manual 1.5.1.0 listing MSTS Bin as a requirement (section 13.2.1, page 278) that prompted the question. Perhaps that is just hold-over text from an earlier OR version. (?)
I appreciate your help!

> Perhaps that is just hold-over text from an earlier OR version. (?) MSTSBin has never been required for Open Rails.
"Moreover, OR manages the extended set of discrete triggers provided by MSTSbin. "Is that the line you are refering too?

Hello.
MSTS, having become cult sim, was released with numerous bugs and was unfinished.
An official Update (a.k.a. ver 1.4) has solved just few of them, and gave more stock.
MSTS2 was never released, so checho-slovakian, named George Vansa have made his improved Train.exe to run MSTS content.
He worked so hard, that get some issues in real life, but sacrifying himself have given us more lights conditions, more sound triggers, solved many MSTS bugs.
MSTS Bin was hosted on UKTrainsim - No both now - site and George. But Wayne and colleagues gave us ORTS.
Table was copied from MSTS Bin triggers list, but for ORTS - all triggers are working, all lights conditions, plus their assortment have been extended since then.
Carlo Santucci have recently offered simple sequence to program engine start/stop sounds.
Where to get sound clips for starting/stopping engines - I don't know, but maybe they present in internet.
Good luck.

engmod: Yes, that table I referenced starts with "OR manages the following MSTS discrete triggers." And now, if I've got this right, I see it is saying "If you are using MSTS discrete triggers, OR can manage them" and NOT "Here are triggers for OR, with a couple that require MSTS Bin."
The problem I sometimes have is that forum postings and even the manual can presuppose MSTS background knowledge which I don't have as an OR-only/brand-new-to-train-sims guy. This is not a criticism: ET has folks posting who have been working with MSTS and train sims for years, and have this tremendous store of experience and knowledge--- and they can't always be back-tracking to Square 1 for the newbie. I don't at all mind digging for that background knowledge, and most times I've managed to figure things out. But sometimes I'm just stumped for the answer. This was one of those times where I couldn't seem to make headway on my own.
Again, I really appreciate your help!
Weter: Thanks much for the explanation--- and especially for the link! As I'm working on modifying files for features I'd like to see, I find "live" code examples particularly helpful in writing modifications.
One last question from great ignorance: What does ORNYMG stand for? I've solved this much: Open Rails New Years MG. But what is the MG part?
Thanks!

Carlo Santucci have done working migration to MonoGame engine (from X-NA) for his ORTS "NY" branch first - many years before official version.
Now, both are Mono-game running.
Never hesitate to ask. You are welcome.
