With GMAX being pretty dead, or almost impossible to fire up nowadays without a virtual machine, I wanted to deep dive in 3ds max and the new formats, OR can use (instead of S files and ACE files). But there is hardly any information on this let alone tutorials that I know of. Do you guys know, where to find some information? I just started to make a simple model to practice.
I know, the names are the same, as the original msts models (Main, Bogie, Wheel etc), but how do I apply material (I assume dds), so OR understands, how it works and how do I convert it? Does OR have a shapeviewer esq feature, or must I always look in OR itself? I know, you can refresh models within in.

There is a .3ds to .S conversion program that was released shortly after MSTS was, but you will be restricted to exporting MSTS type models.
The good news is that OR is going to support the glTF/glb file format. A quick google search found that this format can be exported from 3DS Max though there may be restrictions. Check the documentation for the version of 3DS Max you are using to see what features are supported.
You can test glTF/glb rolling models in the unstable versions of Open Rails. Just rename the .S file reference in the .ENG file to .glTF or glb. Bear in mind that this is not fully implemented in OR yet so animations, 3D cab views and scenery items will not work.
