FWIW the real coal business for the Rio Grande was in eastern Utah. Coal in CO. was a sideshow by comparison.

I caught glimpses of that Utah operation (and some Colorado, too) in 1980 while traveling between New Mexico and my home state of Oregon. I gained a new appreciation for the D&RGW, then, and am sorry that, it too was finally absorbed. Glad I was able to at least see bits of it . . something to behold.
