Here is a screenshot of a 3DTS Cab Forward on the turntable at Dunsmuir on the SP Shasta Route. In this position, I cannot activate the turntable because the couplers on both ends are just *barely* beyond the ends of the turntable - even though in real life, it is obvious that the turntable could function in this situation because the outermost wheels *are* in fact comfortably on the turntable.

If this seems impractical / unlikely in the real world, consider the image at this link, which is a real SP Cab Forward on the turntable at Dunsmuir. There are in fact numerous mentionings of this turntable as being *just* long enough for the largest SP Cab Forwards.

So, is there any way to adjust Open Rail's turntable coding to consider the outermost axle positions in a model as the relevant length for a turntable, and NOT the full ENG or WAG length over coupler pulling faces?

I adjust length in the turntable.dat to be a few meters longer than the table to get around this problem, e.g.: 27m is changed to 31m. It may not be optimal but it works, one has to bear in mind the turntable cannot have loose consists or AI engines directly up against it once this solution is applied or they'll foul the table.

Having the extra 2-3m makes a difference. In reality, the tracks are too close together to have anything within 3-5 m of the turntable without fouling an adjacent track...

Hello.

Yes that is right. Therefore, a qualified person can turn it on for the turntable. It is his job to make sure of the necessary free space.
There is an Openrails folder in the route folder. In there is the turntables.dat file. This includes the turntable. The value of the line Diameter ( 24 ) must be changed.
According to UIC regulations, the distance between the corner stop (or the farthest point of the vehicle) and the axle closest to it can be a maximum of 4 meters. This means adding 2×4=8 meters. But this is a theoretical calculation. Based on this, I would try to determine the front and rear overhang of the specific locomotive measured from the wheel, and add it. Maybe add a reserve distance of 1-2 meters.

Sincerely, Laci1959
